Story of the Day

The Capitals visit the Pittsburgh Penguins today at PPG Paints Arena for the first half of a home-and-home, back-to-back set. Washington begins the day three points out of playoff position.

Should he start, Logan Thompson will play his 100th game as a Capital this afternoon. Thompson (29-21-6, 2.47 GAA, .912 Sv%) is coming off a 22-save shutout on Wednesday against Toronto and enters today’s contest one win shy of his second straight 30-win season. Since joining Washington ahead of the 2024-25 season, Thompson ranks third in the NHL in save percentage (.911), fourth in goals-against average (2.48) and tied for fifth in wins (60) among goaltenders with at least 75 games played.

This season, Thompson ranks tied for second in the NHL in save percentage (.912) and tied for third in goals-against average (2.47) (min. 40 GP). Per Sportlogiq, Thompson ranks second in the League in cumulative goals saved above expected (46.9). Thompson’s 17 starts with one or fewer goals against are tied for the most in the NHL (Andrei Vasilevskiy: 17; Scott Wedgewood: 17), while his seven games with 35-plus saves are the second most (Juuse Saros: 8).
