The Vegas Golden Knights rallied late to defeat the Utah Mammoth 5-4 in overtime on Thursday night at T-Mobile Arena in their first home game of the preseason.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
The Golden Knights struck first just before the midway mark of the opening frame when Victor Olofsson fired home a one-timer off a feed from Shea Theodore. Utah tied the game with 1:39 left in the frame on a goal from Zac Jones, then Liam O'Brien gave them a 2-1 lead less than a minute later. Artem Duda found the net with 5:54 remaining in the middle frame to put the Mammoth up two goals.
Vegas pulled back within one just over five minutes into the third period on Jeremy Lauzon's slapshot from the point to make it 3-2. Mark Stone evened the score for the Golden Knights on the man advantage with 6:54 left in the game when he gathered Jack Eichel's rebound in the slot and beat Sebastian Cossa. Tomas Lavoie put Utah back in front with 1:31 remaining in the third, but less than a minute later, Tomas Hertl buried another tying goal off a backdoor dish from Mitch Marner to send the game to overtime at 4-4. Less than a minute into the extra frame, Eichel netted the game winner, slipping a wrist shot past Cossa on the far side.
