The Golden Knights opened the preseason Saturday with a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings behind a two-goal showing from Jackson Hallum. Vegas took a 2-0 lead late in the first period on two tallies in short succession in the final two minutes of the frame. Viliam Kmec got on the board first with a slapshot from the right faceoff circle, then Raphael Lavoie followed up less than a minute later to put the visitors up two. Andre Lee scored the only marker of the second period to bring Los Angeles within one, then Lane Pederson brought them even at two, just past the midway point in the third. Shortly after, Hallum used his speed to get outside of the Kings defense and score the eventual game winner, before burying an empty-netter late to seal the 4-2 victory.
2025-26 SEASON SERIES
Vegas swept San Jose last season, taking all four games (4-0-0) and outscoring the Sharks 22-10. The first matchup marked the second regular-season game for the Golden Knights, when they came away with a 4-3 overtime win after Jack Eichel forced sudden death in the final two minutes of the game with a dump-in from center ice that remarkably found the net. Vegas followed up with another 4-3 victory on Nov. 29, this time on home ice and in 60 minutes.
The Golden Knights finished the season series with a pair of 7-2 wins in the span of a month, on Dec. 23 and Jan. 11. Tomas Hertl led the way in the season series, posting nine points (5G, 4A), including a career-high five points (2G, 3A) in the most recent game against his former team. Mark Stone followed up with eight points (1G, 7A), while Eichel added five (3G, 2A) and Mitch Marner registered four (3G, 1A).
The Golden Knights hold a 31-2-5 all-time record against the Sharks across the nine-year franchise history.
KEYS TO THE GAME
Use Your Speed: The Golden Knights possess impressive speed throughout the roster, and it has been an effective staple of the team's identity in playing winning hockey. Regardless of which 12 forwards and six defensemen are in the lineup on a given night, Vegas has the ability to outwork opponents down the ice and in transition. Breaking pucks out quickly and creating chances on the rush will help offset the rust that comes with O-zone offense this early in the preseason and allow them to generate scoring chances.
Embrace the Challenge: Four fewer preseason games means less time to ramp up for veterans, and less time to make an impression for prospects – it presents the opportunity to make the most of what time on ice players have in either situation. If all players focus on starring in their role and doing their part, it will lead to quality team hockey and allow Vegas to get out to a 2-0-0 start as they head into the final two exhibition games before Opening Knight.
