Story of the Day

The Capitals visit the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight at Scotiabank Arena for the third and final meeting between the teams this season. Washington leads the season series 2-0-0, having outscored Toronto 8-2 through two games. Jakob Chychrun leads the Capitals with three goals vs. Toronto this season, while Logan Thompson has a 2-0-0 record with a 1.00 goals-against average, a .955 save percentage and one shutout in two starts against the Maple Leafs. Washington has earned at least one point in five straight games against Toronto, dating back to the start of the 2024-25 season (4-0-1).

With Ilya Protas set to make his NHL debut tonight, the Capitals will have two teenagers play in the same game for the first time since March 16, 2014 (Tom Wilson and Connor Carrick). Washington will also have four rookies in its lineup for the first time since March 20, 2022 (Connor McMichael, Martin Fehérváry, Brett Leason and Axel Jonsson-Fjallby). The Capitals’ 2025-26 rookie class, led by Ryan Leonard (17g-24a–41p in 71 GP) and Justin Sourdif (15g-18a–33p in 74 GP), has been bolstered by the recent arrivals of 19-year-old prospects Cole Hutson (2g-5a–7p in 10 GP) and Protas (28g-34a–62p in 66 AHL GP). This season, the Capitals rank tied for third in the NHL in goals by rookies and seventh in points (34g-47a–81p), despite having only two rookies who have played more than 10 games. The Capitals’ 81 points by rookies are more than their previous three seasons combined and mark their highest single-season total since 2010-11 (30g-54a–84p).
