The Sabres assigned forward Alex Nylander and defensemen Brendan Guhle and Brandon Hickey to the Rochester Americans on Monday afternoon.
Nylander staked his claim for a roster spot beginning with a strong performance at the Prospects Challenge, where he finished second in the tournament with five points in three games. He followed that performance with four points in five games during the preseason.
The 20-year-old will look to build on that showing with the Amerks, for whom he scored 27 points (8+19) in 51 games as a second-year pro last season after missing the first month of the season due to an injury.

Guhle, 21, scored 26 points (8+18) in 50 games for Rochester last season and five assists during an 18-game stint with Buffalo. He had been skating on an extra defense pair with veteran Matt Tennyson in recent days.
Hickey, a first-year pro acquired in a trade with Arizona during the offseason, has been out since last week with an injury.
Buffalo has 27 players remaining on its training camp roster (15 forwards, 10 defensemen and two goaltenders). Five of those players were absent from practice on Monday due to injuries: forwards Sean Malone, Johan Larsson and Scott Wilson and defensemen Zach Bogosian and Matt Hunwick.
Larsson and Bogosian are day-to-day with lower-body injuries.
The deadline for submitting the final 23-man roster is Tuesday at 5 p.m.
