Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has been named NHL Rookie of the Month for January, the league announced Wednesday.
Luukkonen led rookie goaltenders with nine starts in January, during which he went 6-2-1 with a .907 save percentage. He made 30-plus saves in five of those games, including a 39-save victory over Minnesota on January 7.
The 23-year-old's highlights included a pad save on Anthony Beauvillier with seven seconds remaining in regulation against the Islanders on January 19, after the Sabres honored former goaltender Ryan Miller with a jersey retirement ceremony. The Sabres won the game in overtime.

"He's turning into this monster this year," defense Rasmus Dahlin said that night. "It's fun to watch."

Luukkonen is 10-2-1 with a .917 save percentage in 13 games dating back to December 15. His 20 starts this season rank third among rookie goaltenders, trailing Logan Thompson (34) and Stuart Skinner (27).
"It's a great feeling," he said earlier this month. "It's what you put your work towards, to play here. It's a good feeling and what makes it better is I feel I've been able to help the team win. That's kind of the biggest part of being a goalie and what I'm most happy about."
