Buffalo Sabres forward Drake Caggiula will undergo surgery to repair a herniated disc and miss the remainder of the season, general manager Kevyn Adams told reporters Thursday. The expected recovery time is six to eight months.

Caggiula has not played since sustaining his injury on Nov. 22 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He initially attempted a non-surgical recovery, having practiced with the team in a non-contact jersey in December.
"The hope was he could have rehabbed his way through that and come back and play," Sabres coach Don Granato said. "That was his hope and obviously the doctors' hope. It didn't work."
He appeared in 18 games for Buffalo this season after signing a one-year deal during the summer. He finishes the season with two goals and three assists.
