The Buffalo Sabres played catchup for most of the night in a 6-3 loss to the New York Rangers on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.
Jeff Skinner, Victor Olofsson, Sam Reinhart scored for Buffalo as they tried to erase multiple deficits. Dustin Tokarski made 23 saves.
Mika Zibanejad recorded a hat trick and Kaapo Kakko scored twice for New York. Kevin Rooney added an empty-netter in the final minute of play. Adam Fox picked up three assists. He leads all NHL defenseman with 41 helpers. Igor Shesterkin stopped 31 shots.
Buffalo's power play finished 1-for-4. The penalty kill went 1-for-3.

What happened

The Rangers opened the scoring at the 4:49 in when Zibanejad found twine. Then, just 1:27 later, Skinner's backhand in front went top shelf to tie the game.
Kakko one-timed a cross-ice pass from Adam Fox to put the Rangers ahead 2-1 with 7:58 remaining in the opening period.
Zibanejad scored again with 2:50 left in the period. With 1:08 remaining on a power-play opportunity, he redirected a slap pass by Artemi Panarin in to give the Rangers a two-goal advantage.
At the 2:05 mark of the second period, Zibanejad completed the hat trick. He skated in over the blue line, worked his way around Colin Miller and beat Tokarski with a low shot to make it 4-1.
Olofsson cut the lead to two with a power-play goal with 5:13 remaining in the second period.
Kakko scored his second of the game, batting a puck into the net at the top of the crease while on the power play 7:06 into the third period to make it 5-2.
With 9:26 left in regulation, Reinhart one-timed in a cross-ice feed from Rasmus Dahlin for his 21st goal of the season.
With 1:32 left and down by two, the Sabres found themselves on the power play. With 54.4 seconds left, the Rangers scored shorthanded when Rooney shot the puck into an empty net.
