The Buffalo Sabres earned five of six possible points on their road trip after Malcolm Subban helped steal one Friday night in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Sabres goaltender made a career-high 45 saves at PPG Paints Arena in his first game back from an injury he sustained in his Buffalo debut on December 4.
Zemgus Girgensons and Rasmus Dahlin scored for Buffalo. Dahlin's goal late in the third period tied things up and forced the extra period.
Jeff Carter scored the overtime winner for Pittsburgh. Evan Rodrigues and Brock McGinn also scored for the Penguins. Tristan Jarry made 19 stops.

How it happened

The Penguins capitalized on an early power play to go up 1-0. On their sixth shot of their first man advantage 5:53 into the game, Rodrigues scored on a one-timer.
With 5:33 left in the first, Subban made an incredible save, reaching behind his back with his glove to keep the puck from going over the goal line. An official review during the next stoppage in play confirmed that Subban did in fact deny Rodrigues his second of the night.
Subban did his part to keep Buffalo in the game early. The Sabres were outshot 21-5 in the first period.
McGinn slapped home a loose puck that bounced right him 6:45 into the second period to put the Penguins up by two.
Rookie defenseman Casey Fitzgerald recorded the first point of his NHL career on Girgensons' goal with 7:25 left in the second. Girgensons put home the rebound from Fitzgerald's point shot.
Dahlin tied things up with 5:18 remaining in regulation, creeping into the slot and wristing in a pass from Rasmus Asplund for his sixth goal of the year.
Buffalo went on the power play with 4.6 seconds left in the third and opened overtime with the man advantage.
However, they could not capitalize and the Penguins eventually scored. Carter won a draw at center ice and then accepted a feed from Kris Letang and beat Subban with 2:07 remaining in overtime.

Worthy of a mention

Fitzgerald skated 16:42 in his NHL debut. Early in the second period, he got into his first fight, trading blows with Sam Lafferty after Lafferty laid a big hit on Vinnie Hinostroza. He later recorded his first assist.
