Fantasy Spin: Short-term fill-ins for Blues goalie Allen

Jake Allen of the St. Louis Blues is week-to-week because of a lower-body injury, prompting fantasy owners to find a short-term replacement for the breakout goalie.

Slide Allen into one of your injured-reserve spots and scan the waiver wire for the most attractive option based on your league size and categories.

Brian Elliott (64 percent owned) is the obvious replacement if he's available in your league. Elliott started the season with four straight wins but went through a rough stretch in limited action from Oct. 24 to Jan. 8 (1-4-4) before defeating the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, allowing one goal on 27 shots. He assumes the No. 1 job and has won nearly 50 percent of his career games (148 wins, 30 shutouts in 298 games).

At the Rink: Panthers at Canucks

VANCOUVER -- Roberto Luongo and the Florida Panthers are trying not to get too worked up about their franchise-record 12-game winning streak, but the goaltender admitted it's getting harder as they move up the NHL record books.

The Panthers can become the ninth team in NHL history to win at least 13 straight with a victory against Luongo's former team, the Vancouver Canucks, on Monday (10 p.m. ET; FS-F, SNP).

"There's a lot of buzz around our team, which is nice," Luongo said. "We just want to keep it going, keep it quiet, not too loud and go about our business."

At the Rink: Red Wings at Kings

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Kyle Quincey will return to the Detroit Red Wings lineup Monday against the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center (10:30 p.m. ET; SNE, SNO, SNP, FS-D, FS-W).

Quincey has been out since Oct. 23 because of an injury to his right ankle. He had surgery on the ankle Nov. 14.

Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said Quincey would play but was not sure which defenseman would come out of the lineup, according to comments posted on the Red Wings' Twitter feed. Defenseman Jakub Kindl, who cleared waivers Sunday, was assigned to Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League.

Quincey has one goal and two assists in seven games while averaging 18:59 of ice time per game.

At the Rink: Sharks at Flames

CALGARY -- Goaltender Karri Ramo will make his 12th consecutive start when the Calgary Flames host the San Jose Sharks at Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday (9 p.m. ET; CSN-CA, SNW).

Ramo's availability came into question when he was hit in the throat by a shot from forward Mason Raymond in practice Sunday.

"For the first few minutes I felt like the puck was still stuck there in my throat," Ramo said. "Other than that, it was sore for three or four hours. Swallowing was really hard. I was able to still breathe and everything. It was a little bit higher and it would've been probably worse. It was a lucky thing and an unlucky thing. You don't want to get hit in the throat, but it hit so low it was good.

"It was a couple of centimeters away from being a real problem, but everything's fine now."

Fantasy Spin: Replacing Maple Leafs' van Riemsdyk

James van Riemsdyk of the Toronto Maple Leafs has had his resurgent fantasy stock put on hold because of injury.

Van Riemsdyk, who had 13 points in 11 games between Dec. 8 and Jan. 6, is expected to miss 6-8 weeks because of a non-displaced fracture in his left foot. Van Riemsdyk is owned in 90 percent of Yahoo leagues and is ranked 71st among players based on performance in standard leagues. He leads Toronto with 29 points in 40 games and he's tied for 19th among all players with 129 shots on goal.

Toronto's top-six forward group of late had been van Riemsdyk with Tyler Bozak and PA Parenteau on the top line with Michael Grabner, Nazem Kadri and Leo Komarov on the second line. The injury negatively impacts the stock of Bozak (20 percent) to say the least. Komarov (C/LW, 50 percent) and Kadri (33 percent), if available in your league, will be relied upon more heavily by the Maple Leafs to carry the offense and should be added at once. Potential options to replace van Riemsdyk on the top line include Joffrey Lupul (9 percent) and Daniel Winnik (1 percent), who could be short-term cogs but don't possess much long-term fantasy value.

Check NHL.com's latest Fantasy All-Access column for center-eligible options who could be of greater fantasy help than Bozak; among them Tomas Hertl of the San Jose Sharks, Sean Couturier of the Philadelphia Flyers, Sam Reinhart of the Buffalo Sabres and Alexander Wennberg of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Stash van Riemsdyk in your fantasy injured-reserve spot or on the bench in a keeper league as his injury timetable suggests he could return in late February or early March. That leaves enough time for him to give your lineup a late push.

As for more left wing replacements, here are some options:

At the Rink: Bruins at Rangers

NEW YORK -- New York Rangers left wing Chris Kreider will play against the Boston Bruins on Monday (7 p.m. ET; NHLN-US, TVA Sports, SN, NESN, MSG) after missing the past two games with a right hand injury. Kreider had a laceration on his hand that could not be stitched because of a risk of infection.

Kreider will replace Oscar Lindberg, who will be scratched for the second time this season despite have points in each of the past two games, including a goal in New York's 4-3 overtime loss to the Washington Capitals on Saturday.

Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said his decision to scratch Lindberg was based on his preference to keep third-line center Kevin Hayes in the lineup, and his fourth line of center Dominic Moore, left wing Tanner Glass and right wing Viktor Stalberg together.

Matthews continues stellar play in Switzerland

Auston Matthews, who many project to be the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, is playing for Zurich in Switzerland's top professional league this season. NHL.com will follow his journey leading to the NHL draft this season with a weekly update.

Auston Matthews, an A-rated skater on NHL Central Scouting's November players to watch list for the 2016 NHL Draft, made a memorable return to the Zurich lineup Friday when he scored two goals, had four shots on goal and was a plus-2 in a 7-0 victory against SCL.

Matthews had missed the past four games while helping the United States win the bronze medal at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship. He led the U.S. with seven goals, one shy of the U.S. record for a single WJC. He also tied for the team lead with 11 points and led all forwards with 26 shots on goal at the 11-day tournament in Helsinki, Finland.
