Story of the Day

The Capitals face the San Jose Sharks tonight at Capital One Arena for the second and final regular-season meeting between the teams this season. Alex Ovechkin (2g-0a–2p) and Ryan Leonard (2g-2a–4p) each scored twice, Matt Roy recorded a career-high three assists, Brandon Duhaime (1g-1a–2p) and Trevor van Riemsdyk (0g-2a–2p) both tallied multiple points and Charlie Lindgren stopped 23 of 24 shots faced in Washington’s 7-1 over San Jose on Dec. 3 at SAP Center. The Capitals are 8-3-1 in their last 12 games against the Sharks.

Tonight’s contest marks the second game of a three-game homestand. After hosting the Florida Panthers on Saturday, the Capitals will embark on a season-long six-game road trip from Jan. 19-29. Washington has earned at least one point in 14 of its last 18 home games (11-4-3, .694 P%), dating back to Nov. 5. The Capitals’ 11 home wins are tied for the third most in the NHL in that span, while their 25 points earned are the third most.

The Capitals, who currently sit in third place in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 24-17-6 (54 points), have earned points in five of their last eight games overall (4-3-1).
