DENVER (AP) -The Colorado Avalanche's Bret McLean scored a goal with 27.8 seconds left in regulation then added a shootout goal as the Avs defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 in a preseason game Monday night.

Wojtek Wolski and Paul Stastny also scored shootout goals for the Avs. Jiri Hudler and Jason Williams had goals in the shootout for Detroit and Colorado goaltender Jose Theodore stopped Mikael Samuelsson's backhanded shot to preserve the win.

Stastny, Brad Richardson and Johnny Boychuk also scored in regulation for Colorado (3-1-0). Williams, Matt Hussey, Niklas Kronvall and Jakub Kindl scored for Detroit (2-1-2).

Richardson and Boychuk scored 15 seconds apart in the third period to put Colorado ahead 3-2. The lead didn't last long. Hussey beat Theodore with a slap shot at 2:57 and Kindl flipped a shot over Theodore's left shoulder at 8:24.

Detroit led 1-0 after one period.

Goaltender Chris Osgood stopped a three-shot flurry with Josh Langfeld serving a hooking minor. The Red Wings had barely killed off the penalty when Tomas Kopecky carried the puck into the Avalanche end. He found Williams in the left circle and Williams put a one-timer past Theodore at 15:26.

Detroit caught a break in getting its second goal, a power-play score by Niklas Kronvall at 16:28 of the second period. Theodore stopped Kronvall's shot, but Colorado defenseman Karlis Skrastins hit the puck in with his stick.

Colorado got a power-play goal from Stastny at 17:32 of the second. The shot came from the right circle and got the Avalanche within 2-1.
