Becoming an official
Here are some suggestions on how to go about becoming an on-ice official from the mind of one of our current officials.

The best way is to attend a "Carding Clinic" that is offered by your local Minor Hockey Association; Canada is CAHA, United States is USA Hockey.
In my opinion, one should start out in the "levels system" that is offered. Next, try to work as much hockey that is available to you because in this profession there is NO substitute for practical experience. Hopefully the individual will have the opportunity to be supervised as well, because without positive, constructive criticism, it is hard to improve. And probably the last thing would be to take advantage of the various Referee Schools that are put on in Canada, and the US over the summer months. Many officials on the NHL staff are instructors, including myself, at these camps. These camps are also where the NHL will try to draw from to find prospective Professional Officials.
