Couturier-PHI 1-7

PHILADELPHIA --Sean Couturier scored two goals to help the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-1 win against the Buffalo Sabres at Wells Fargo Center on Sunday.
Shayne Gostisbehere and Ivan Provorov scored, and Michal Neuvirth made 30 saves in his first start since Nov. 28 for Philadelphia (19-15-8), which won its third straight game and second in as many days after a 6-3 win against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday.

It was the final game for the Flyers before their five-day break.
"We spoke after [a 5-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday] that we weren't too happy about our effort and we had three games in four nights before the break and we wanted to do good," Couturier said. "I think we showed some good character here."
Ryan O'Reilly scored for the Sabres (10-23-9), who have lost four games in a row (0-3-1). Robin Lehner made 25 saves.

Neuvirth was out for a month because of a lower-body injury, and after being activated from injured reserve Dec. 26, he played one period in the previous four games, replacing Brian Elliott for the third against the Penguins.
It was his first victory since a 33-save shutout against the Blues on Nov. 2 (five games).
"It's a huge win for me," he said. "I haven't been feeling good about myself lately. It's frustrating when you get injured and you can't help the teammates. I feel good about myself right now."
Neuvirth was strong in the first period when the Flyers were called for two penalties in the opening 3:42 and were outshot 12-5.
"It's always good when you face early shots and get to it right away," Neuvirth said. "I had a good warmup. I was feeling good all morning. Penalty kill stepped up big for me there."
Among his biggest saves was a lunging glove stop on Sam Reinhart at 5:04 of the first period.
"That was a huge save there," Flyers forward Jakub Voracek said. "We took two penalties early in the game and [Neuvirth] was huge. … He made a couple huge saves in the game and we just focused on ourselves on the ice and not let them have many scoring chances. When we did [Neuvirth] was big."
O'Reilly scored on the power play at 1:50 of the second period to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead.
Gostisbehere tied the game 1-1 less than two minutes later after he broke up a play in the neutral zone, then joined the attack, took a return pass off the rush from Scott Laughton, and beat Lehner at 3:42.

"I thought we had some really good shots, good looks," Sabres coach Phil Housley said. "You look at Reinhart, it was an excellent save and we built off that. I believe [shots] were 12-5 in our favor [in the first period], and then in the second period we get the power-play goal. Again, we were staying with it and then we got away from it and for some reason we want to make plays instead of trying to do the right thing and make the right choices."
The Flyers went ahead 2-1 on Couturier's power-play goal. Voracek passed to Claude Giroux behind the Sabres net. He came out on the left side and sent it to Couturier for a one-timer that went in to the far side past Lehner's glove at 7:17 of the second.
Couturier (18:45) and Provorov (19:27) each scored an empty-net goal in the third period to make it 4-1.

They said it

"I think we had a solid first period. We kept getting pucks deep, we grinded away and we got opportunities. Then after we scored our goal, it seemed like everything changed. It [stinks]."-- Sabres goaltender Robin Lehner
"I think when you're playing well you want to keep it going. But at the same time let's take this break to just relax our bodies. It's going to be important for us when we come back from the break that we're back at the same momentum, same intensity we have right now."-- Flyers forward Claude Giroux
