Robitaille breaks Kings' club record for goals with a hat trick

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Luc Robitaille of the Los Angeles Kings broke the Los Angeles Kings' franchise record for goals with a hat trick in an 8-6 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers on Thursday night.

Robitaille, who broke in with the Kings 19 seasons ago and was the NHL rookie of the year, is the league's career leader among left wings with 662 goals in 1,401 games. He's scored 552 of them with the Kings, two more than boyhood idol Marcel Dionne.

Robitaille tied Dionne at 4:20 of the first period when he intercepted a clearing pass, then got a return feed from Derek Armstrong before faking goalie Mike Dunham to the ice and slipping the puck past Dunham's stick.

The record-breaker came with 15:04 left in the third, when Robitaille beat Dunham between the pads on a breakaway with the teams skating 4-on-4 to put the Kings ahead 6-5.

For good measure, he added a power-play goal into an empty net with 4 seconds to play, completing his 15th career hat trick and 14th with the Kings. Dionne had 24 hat tricks while playing for Los Angeles.

Dionne and Robitaille both made the jump straight from junior hockey to the NHL without spending a day in the minors. Dionne, who began his Hall of Fame career with Detroit, was the second overall pick in the 1971 draft. Robitaille was the 171st overall pick in 1984 and the Kings' ninth-round choice - four rounds and 102 players after they selected current New York Mets pitcher Tom Glavine.

Robitaille, who turns 40 next month, has 1,146 points in 1,047 regular-season games during his three stints with the Kings, spanning 14 seasons. Dionne played 921 games during his 12 seasons in Los Angeles, and amassed a club-record 1,307 points. Their only season as teammates was 1986-87, when Robitaille won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year and became the only rookie to lead the Kings in scoring.

Dionne won an Art Ross Trophy as the league's top scorer with 137 points for the Kings in 1979-80. The eight-time All-Star center had six 50-goal seasons with the Kings, including a career-high 59 in 1978-79. Robitaille, also an eight-time All-Star, had three 50-goal seasons for Los Angeles - including a career-best 63 goals in 1992-93.
