NEW YORK (CP) - Atlanta Thrashers centre Marc Savard was named the NHL's player of the week Monday while Florida Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo claimed the defensive honours.
Savard set a Thrashers record by scoring eight points (two goals, six assists) over consecutive games last week. He had a goal and two assists in a 7-3 win Friday at Washington and added a goal and four assists Saturday in the Thrashers' home-opening 8-1 victory over the Capitals.
He was went pointless in a 2-0 loss at Florida on Wednesday.
Vancouver Canucks left-winger Markus Naslund, Detroit Red Wings left-winger Henrik Zetterberg and Chicago Blackhawks rookie Pavel Vorobiev were the runners-up.
Luongo posted shutouts in his first two starts of the season and went 2-1-0 with a 0.67 goals-against average and .979 save percentage in three games.
He made 34 saves against Atlanta on Wednesday and earned his 25th career shutout with a 27-save performance in a 2-0 victory Friday against Tampa Bay.
On Saturday he made 32 saves in a 2-1 loss at Tampa Bay, during which his season-opening shutout streak was stopped at 140 minutes 55 seconds.
Dominik Hasek of the Ottawa Senators, Jose Theodore of the Montreal Canadiens and Detroit's Manny Legace were runners-up.
