The combination of a goal-scoring touch and playmaking skill made Alexeev an attractive draft option. Alexeev's size -- 6-foot-5, 215 pounds -- also weighed on the minds of the Tampa Bay Lightning brass when they selected Alexeev with the eighth pick in the 2000 Entry Draft. That year, Alexeev tallied 31 goals and 41 assists for the Erie Otters of the OHL. Alexeev brought his bruising body to the NHL and played 44 games with the Lightning a year later. He notched his first career goal Feb. 6, 2002, a game winner against the Florida Panthers, and finished his rookie campaign with four goals and four assists.
