Greg Smith, 31, returns to the Washington Capitals this season, the same team he received his first taste of NHL healthcare as an athletic training intern in 1994. Smith spent the previous two seasons as head athletic trainer for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. Prior to accepting the Ducks' top position in 1997, he spent two seasons as head athletic trainer for the Baltimore Bandits, a former Anaheim affiliate in the American Hockey League. Greg was honored to serve as an athletic trainer at the 1993 Word Hockey Championships in Zurich, Switzerland. The Bowie, Md., native received a bachelor's degree in physical education from Salisbury State University in 1992. He was an athletic trainer at the high school level in 1993 on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where he also taught adaptive physical education. Greg went on to earn a master's degree in athletic training in 1994 from California University of Pennsylvania, where he also served as a graduate assistant trainer. A certified athletic trainer and massage therapist, he enjoys golf, fishing and diving. Greg and his wife, Lisa, reside in Bowie, Md.
Doug Shearer

Doug "Sluggo" Shearer, 41, is the guiding force behind the Society of Professional Hockey Equipment Managers (SPHEM), serving as the president since 1996. Shearer joined the Capitals in 1983 after serving as head equipment manager of the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears from 1981-83. Doug was honored by PHATS/SPHEM in 1999 for working more than 1,000 regular season games in professional hockey. He was honored to serve as equipment manager at the 1997 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland and the 1999 NHL All-Star Game in Tampa. The Elizabethtown, Pa., native received an undergraduate degree in health and physical education from West Chester State College in 1981. Doug is a certified member of the Athletic Equipment Managers Association. His hobbies include hunting, fishing, boating and carpentry. Doug and his wife, Carrie, reside in Dunkirk, Md., with their children Zachary and Amy.
