Chicago's Mark Bell: Lighting Lamps and Ringing Bells in The Windy City by NHL | Oct. 30, 2003
Do you remember the first time you tried to play hockey? Think every pro was born with a number on his back and skates on his feet? Mark Bell, the 23-year-old right-winger for the Chicago Blackhawks said that the first time he tried to play hockey, at age four, he was scared to go on the ice. After attempting to run away from the rink, he remembers his mom saying "No, get back out there," and, nineteen years later, it looks like Chicago fans owe Mamma Bell a Thank You card.
At 6'4, 205 lbs. Mark is all grown up and it shows. He was selected as the eighth overall pick in the 1998 NHL Draft, and in his rookie year he proved to be one of the best youngsters on the ice. After tying for eighth among rookies in points (12 goals, 16 assists), Mark returned to score 14 goals and 15 assists in his second solid year in the pros. He has also proven to be a physical force on the ice; Mark finished second in hits by a rookie, and started the new season with a total of 237 penalty minutes in his young NHL career.
A native of St. Paul's, Ontario, Mark helped Team Canada capture the Bronze Medal at the World Junior Championships in 2000. And he still returns to his family's farm in tiny St. Paul's during the summers. Number 28 knows that it's a big deal to play in the NHL and he loves every minute of it, even the ones he spends in the penalty box. When he isn't at the rink, Mark enjoys listening to rock and roll music and playing golf.
