Flyers visit Capitals on Wednesday Night Rivalry

Wednesday, 01.27.2016 / 3:00 AM / Tale of the Tape

John Kreiser - NHL.com Managing Editor

The Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals close out the pre-All Star portion of their schedule when they play in the Wednesday Night Rivalry game at Verizon Center (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN).

Win or lose, the Capitals will enter the All-Star break with the best record in the NHL, and are running away with first place in the Metropolitan Division. It's their first game since a 6-3 victory against the Columbus Blue Jackets last Tuesday; Washington's scheduled home games Friday against the Anaheim Ducks and Sunday against the Pittsburgh Penguins were postponed by a snowstorm.

The St. Louis Blues make their only trip to Joe Louis Arena this season when they visit the Detroit Red Wings in this week’s Wednesday Night Rivalry game (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVA Sports).

Expect a close game; each of the past three between the teams has gone to overtime, with the Red Wings winning all three.

Each team is toward the All-Star break with injury problems. The Blues are still without starting goaltender Jake Allen, and won't have defensemen Carl Gunnarsson and Robert Bortuzzo, as well as forward Magnus Paajarvi. Despite the personnel problems, St. Louis is 4-1-0 in its past five games.

Bruins visit Flyers in Wednesday Night Rivalry

The Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers will play each other for the first time since late October when they face off in the Wednesday Night Rivalry game (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, TVA Sports).

Philadelphia won 5-4 in overtime at TD Garden on Oct. 21, but the Bruins haven’t gone home empty-handed against the Flyers since a 5-2 loss at Wells Fargo Center on April 23, 2013. One big reason for Boston’s success against Philadelphia has been the play of goaltender Tuukka Rask, who has a 9-1-2 career record against the Flyers with a 2.07 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage.

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks complete their home-and-home series when they play in this week's Wednesday Night Rivalry game (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, TVA Sports).

The Blackhawks will be going for the sweep after winning 3-2 in overtime at Pittsburgh on Tuesday. Chicago rookie forward Artemi Panarin had two goals, including the game-winner. It was the seventh time in their past 10 games the Penguins and Blackhawks have gone to overtime.

Rangers visit Lightning on Wednesday Night Rivalry

The New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning complete the 2015 portion of their schedules when they face off at Amalie Arena in the outgoing year’s final Wednesday Night Rivalry game (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN).

The Lightning have dominated the rivalry in the past few years. Tampa Bay has won the past five regular-season games and kept the Rangers from advancing to the Stanley Cup Final last spring with a 2-0 victory in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final.

One reason for Tampa Bay’s recent regular-season dominance has been the play of goaltender Ben Bishop, who is 9-0-0 lifetime against the Rangers with a 1.43 goals-against average, a .947 save percentage and two shutouts. Bishop shut out the Rangers in Games 5 and 7 of the conference final.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will play their second game under new coach Mike Sullivan when they visit the Boston Bruins in the Wednesday Night Rivalry game (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN).

The Penguins named Sullivan as their coach Saturday after firing Mike Johnston. It’s his first job as an NHL coach since being fired by the Bruins after the 2005-06 season. After that, he served as an assistant for three teams before working in player development for the Chicago Blackhawks in 2014-15.

Canadiens host Bruins in Wednesday Night Rivalry

The Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens will face off for the final time before the 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic when they meet in the Wednesday Night Rivalry game at Bell Centre (7:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, RDS).

The next time the Bruins and Canadiens see each other will be Jan. 1, 2016, when they play outdoors at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. More immediately, the Bruins are concerned with finding a way to end a seven-game losing streak against the Canadiens. Boston hasn’t defeated Montreal since winning 4-1 at Bell Centre on March 12, 2014. That streak includes two 4-2 victories by Montreal this season.

Islanders host Rangers on Wednesday Night Rivalry

Wednesday, 12.02.2015 / 3:00 AM / Tale of the Tape

John Kreiser - NHL.com Managing Editor

The New York Rangers will make their first trip to Brooklyn when they visit the New York Islanders in this week's Wednesday Night Rivalry game (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, TVA Sports).

It will be the Rangers' first game as the visiting team inside an arena within New York City since March 3, 1942, when they played to a 4-4 tie with the Brooklyn Americans, who, despite their name, played their home games at Madison Square Garden. The Islanders are in their first season at Barclays Center after playing their home games at Nassau Coliseum since entering the NHL in 1972.

Each team is coming off a home win in Monday. The Rangers ended a three-game losing streak by holding off the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3; the Islanders defeated the Colorado Avalanche 5-3.

Capitals visit Red Wings for Wednesday Night Rivalry

Alex Ovechkin will try again to become the NHL's all-time leading goal-scorer among Russian-born players when he and the Washington Capitals visit the Detroit Red Wings in the Wednesday Night Rivalry game (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, TVA Sports).

Ovechkin and the Capitals are making their second trip to Joe Louis Arena in eight days. He had 15 shots on goal in a 1-0 loss on Nov. 10. Despite coming up empty last week, Ovechkin has nine goals and 17 points in 15 career games against the Red Wings.

Ovechkin tied Sergei Fedorov's record when he scored his 483rd career goal in the second period against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Nov. 7; since then, he’s put the puck in the net twice only to have each goal negated after a coach’s challenge.

Wednesday Night Rivalry: Penguins host Canadiens

Wednesday, 11.11.2015 / 3:00 AM / Tale of the Tape

John Kreiser - NHL.com Managing Editor

The Montreal Canadiens will try to continue their League-leading start when they visit the Pittsburgh Penguins in this week's Wednesday Night Rivalry game (7:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, RDS).

Montreal has 13 victories in its first 16 games, including a 3-2 win in its previous visit to Consol Energy Center on Oct. 13. That loss dropped the Penguins to 0-3-0; however, Pittsburgh has won nine of its 11 games since then, including three of four on a Canadian road trip.

Goaltender Carey Price will be in Pittsburgh as part of the annual dads' trip, but he'll sit out his fifth consecutive game because of a lower-body injury. Rookie backup Mike Condon has more than picked up the slack; he's 3-0-1 in Price's absence and was the NHL's Third Star last week. In his seven games, Condon is 6-0-1 with a League-leading 1.57 goals-against average.
