Jagr set to make Stars' debut against Coyotes

Thursday, 01.17.2013 / 8:08 PM

COYOTES (0-0-0) at STARS (0-0-0)

TV: FS-SW

Season series: This is the first of four meetings between the teams. The Coyotes went 3-0-3 against the Stars in 2011-12.

Big story: Jaromir Jagr makes his Stars debut after signing with Dallas as a free agent last summer.

Team Scope:

Coyotes: Phoenix will be without veteran Ray Whitney, who will be on the opposite side of the ice after signing with Dallas last summer. However, the Coyotes still have their captain after Shane Doan inked a four-year deal in September. The hope is that Doan’s veteran leadership will help guide Phoenix to its fourth straight playoff berth. The Coyotes reached the Western Conference Finals before falling to Los Angeles.

“I didn’t like the way it finished with us losing in the conference finals, but at the same time, it gave us a little taste of what the group can do,” Doan said.

Stars: Dallas will certainly have a different look, with both Jagr and Whitney now in the fold. The duo brings more than 2,500 games of NHL experience and over 1,000 goals to the Lone Star State, which hasn’t seen playoff hockey since 2008.

“At the end of my career, I just want to be somewhere where I feel like the team wants me there,” Jagr said earlier this week. “On the other side, it’s kind of extra motivation to prove to people that they make the right choice.”

Injury report: The Coyotes will be without forward Raffi Torres, who will miss the first eight games due to a suspension for a hit on Chicago’s Marian Hossa during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
