Coyotes welcome in Jets for home opener

Wednesday, 08.06.2014 / 4:50 AM

JETS (0-2-0) at COYOTES (1-1-1)

TV: CBC, FS-A (HD)

Season series: This is the first of two meetings between the clubs this season. The Coyotes hosted the former Atlanta Thrashers eight times throughout the years and won seven of those games, including a 4-3 victory last Feb. 17. The only blemish was a 1-1 tie in 2003-04 that ended former Coyotes goalie Brian Boucher's shutout streak at five games.

Big story: Thirteen players registered at least one point for Phoenix in its first win of the season, 5-2, over the Predators on Thursday. Captain Shane Doan was the only skater to earn a multi-point night on a goal and an assist. Winnipeg, meanwhile, is in search of its first win since making the move from Atlanta. The Jets have been outscored 9-4 in losses to Montreal and Chicago.

Team Scope:

Jets: Winnipeg captain Andrew Ladd and defenseman Dustin Byfuglien played their first games in Chicago since helping lead the Blackhawks to the Stanley Cup in 2010. Unfortunately for Ladd and Byfuglien, it wasn't a memorable one as the Blackhawks rallied from a two-goal deficit to score a 4-3 victory. Jets fourth-line pivot Jim Slater scored both goals against the Blackhawks.

Coyotes: Doan's empty-net goal with 1:10 left in a 5-2 win over Nashville on Thursday gives him 3 goals and 5 points in the team's opening three games. The goal was the 299th of his career. The 35-year-old right wing needs just one more goal to become the second player in NHL history to score 300 goals without the benefit of at least one hat trick (joining Scott Mellanby).

Who's hot: Coyotes defenseman Rostislav Klesla had an assist on Doan's empty-net goal in the third period to finish a plus-4 in the victory over the Predators. He also had four shots on goal while earning 22:38 of ice time.

Injury report: Phoenix defenseman Michal Rozsival has been placed on injured reserve with an upper body injury. … For the Jets, right wing Eric Fehr (shoulder surgery) hopes to return by mid-November.

Stat pack: The Coyotes' power-play, hitting at a 25-percent success rate (4-for-16), is ranked seventh in the League. The Jets have failed to score a goal with the man advantage in nine opportunities through two contests.

Puck drop: This is the first-ever meeting between the current incarnation of the Jets and the franchise that was once based in Winnipeg before moving to the Arizona desert 15 years ago.
