Ryan McDonagh is ready to be captain of the New York Rangers, the defenseman told the New York Daily News.

The Rangers have been without a captain since trading Ryan Callahan to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Martin St. Louis on March 5.

"I think I've progressed into being a go-to guy, someone teammates can look up to and someone they can count on,” McDonagh told Pat Leonard of the Daily News on Friday. "I think guys see I'm willing to do whatever it takes to win… [Being captain] is a big responsibility, too. It's not just about on the ice but how you carry yourself off of it and represent the organization."

McDonagh, 25, had 43 points (14 goals, 29 points) with a plus-11 rating last season while leading the Rangers with 24:49 minutes per game. His 17 points (four goals, 13 assists) in 25 games led all Rangers skaters in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Rangers open training camp Thursday in Greenburgh, N.Y.
