Detroit at Chicago - Game 4
A) Hossa's shorty - With
Henrik Zetterberg sitting in the penalty box, Detroit capitalized on an error while Chicago was on the power play.
With the Hawks controlling play in Detroit territory,
Patrick Sharp made a critical mistake when he was unable to keep the puck in the zone.
Marian Hossa picked up the loose puck and fed
Valtteri Filppula with an outlet pass, leading to a 2-on-1 in the Chicago end of the ice against the Hawks'
Cam Barker. Filppula fed a perfect saucer pass over Barker's stick to Hossa, who then wristed a shot pass
Cristobal Huet from the left circle.
Hossa's first goal of the series gave Detroit a 1-0 lead just 8:41 into the opening period, and showed the Wings were ready to play in Game 4 after dropping the previous game in overtime two days earlier.
B) Huet stops Wings - Detroit already held a 1-0 advantage late in the first period when the Wings put on the pressure with the extra man, peppering
Cristobal Huet with a number of flurries.
Huet was up to the task, however, with his biggest moment coming with just under five minutes to go, when
Brad Stuart fired a long shot from the blue line.
Henrik Zetterberg deflected the blast between the circles, but Huet pushed to his right to make a sliding blocker save. The job wasn't finished yet, as the rebound bounced out to
Mikael Samuelsson, who quickly wristed a shot on net, but Huet managed to square up in time, smothering the puck and keeping the Hawks within one.
C) Franzen's late goal - Applying plenty of pressure on
Cristobal Huet all period long, the Red Wings built on their 1-0 lead late in the first.
After a turnover by
Kris Versteeg in Detroit's end of the ice,
Johan Franzen came away with the puck and skated up ice. With a full head of steam, Franzen carried the puck into Chicago's territory, and wristed a flawless snap shot through the legs of Hawks defenseman
Brian Campbell, past
Cristobal Huet and into the top corner of the net.
Franzen's 10th goal of the postseason came with 20.7 seconds left before the first intermission and gave the Red Wings a commanding 2-0 lead going into the locker room.
D) Filppula builds lead - Already trailing 2-0, the Blackhawks dug themselves an even deeper hole when
Matt Walker took a roughing penalty after the clock ran out in the first period.
While on the power play,
Valtteri Filppula controlled the play in the Chicago zone. He finagled his way around one Hawks defenseman and fed a no-look backhand pass to
Marian Hossa, who quickly wristed a shot on goal. Huet turned aside the initial shot, but Filppula was there to bury the rebound into the back of the net, giving Detroit a 3-0 lead.
E) Two quick goals - The Hawks got some life on a second-period power play, when
Cam Barker took a shot from the blue line and
Jonathan Toews managed to put the rebound past a sprawling
Chris Osgood. Toews' goal closed the gap to 3-1 with plenty of time left for a rally, but the excitement would be shortlived.
Just 12 seconds later,
Marian Hossa would come up with the puck, skate down the right boards, cut across the right circle and fire a shot into the net for his second score of the game.
Hossa's tally re-established Detroit's decisive edge, and ended the day for
Cristobal Huet, who would be pulled in favor of
Corey Crawford. The Wings would score again, but Hossa's goal was the one that killed off the Hawks' momentum, leaving Detroit one win away from a return trip to the Stanley Cup Finals.
FINAL SCORE: Red Wings 6, Blackhawks 1
