At the Rink: Penguins at Wild

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Pittsburgh Penguins will get center Sidney Crosby and defenseman Kris Letang back from injury Saturday against the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center (8 p.m. ET; ROOT, FS-N, FS-WI).

Crosby, who missed the game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday with a lower-body injury said he felt good following the Penguins morning skate.

"To get basically a week here is good and I'm happy with the way I felt," Crosby said.

Crosby said he skated once during the Christmas break in a men's league at home in Nova Scotia, but wasn't sure until Saturday that he could get back in the lineup.

"Not until you get out there and see how it feels," Crosby said. "It's just a matter of trusting you can go out there and take hits. It's a little different than a morning skate but at the same time, you have to be confident about it. It felt pretty good today and that's a good thing."

At the Rink: Blue Jackets at Lightning

TAMPA -- Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Joonas Korpisalo will get a second chance at the Tampa Bay Lightning when the two teams play at Amalie Arena on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; FS-O, SUN).

Korpisalo made his NHL debut against the Lightning on Dec. 14 and made 27 saves in a 2-1 loss.

Since then Korpisalo has started four of the past five games for the Blue Jackets (13-20-3) going 1-3 including a 5-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday that coach John Tortorella said wasn't his fault.

"I think on the fourth goal he has to stop that puck, but he made some big saves for us," Tortorella said. "That's a team effort the way we lost that game. We wasted a 5-on-3 and we weren't the same team after that."

Tortorella hopes the four-day break will help the players erase memories of the first 36 games and become more consistent for the remainder of the season.

"We've had some real encouraging nights and then we end up with some disappointments," Tortorella said. We need to have more encouraging nights than disappointments to get back in this thing. I think it's important for the guys to let everything go. I think [we] can wipe it clean, especially after the way we played against Pittsburgh."

At the Rink: Red Wings at Predators

NASHVILLE -- Detroit Red Wings rookie forward Dylan Larkin will be out with an upper-body injury against the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena on Saturday (8 p.m. ET; FS-D+, FS-TN).

Forward Tomas Nosek will make his NHL debut for the Red Wings and likely play on the fourth line.

"Right now [Larkin] is day-to-day," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "This is a part of sports, it's certainly a part of the NHL is you have guys go in and out. We've said all year that for us to be successful our depth has to be real good. We're going to continue to rely on that organizational depth here tonight with Tomas Nosek."

At the Rink: Stars at Blues

ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Blues coach Ken Hitchcock and Dallas Stars coach Lindy Ruff have been around the game long enough to know to expect the unexpected when it comes to games after the Christmas break.

The Blues (21-11-4) and Stars (26-7-2) meet Saturday at Scottrade Center (8 p.m. ET; FS-SW+, FS-MW) in a heated Central Division battle in the first of back-to-back games against each other. They'll meet again Sunday in Dallas.

"I've found these games between Christmas and New Year's to be some of the wildest, most bizarre games you've ever coached in," said Hitchcock, whose team has won four of five. "Just when you think you've got it figured out, you lay an egg. When you think you're going to have a tough time playing back-to-back because you haven't practiced, you play great.

"I don't think you can take anything from the next two or three games other than try to get points and go from there because you're going to see guys at different levels of fitness, you're going to see people at different levels of mental sharpness. I think you've just got to be able to play and move on. Once January 1st turns, there's a whole other temperature in the League."

At the Rink: Sabres at Bruins

BOSTON -- Buffalo Sabres rookie Jack Eichel will enjoy a homecoming against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; MSG-B, BELL TV, NESN).

Eichel hails from nearby Chelmsford, Mass., and last season he attended Boston University. Eichel and the Terriers won the Beanpot and Hockey East championship here. Eichel wasn't sure how many of his friends and family would be attending but did confirm his family will be in a suite.

"This is exciting for me. There's going to be so many family and friends here," he said. "You know growing up, going to the Bruins game, you always dream of playing the Garden. And now I'm going to get to do it for the first time against the Bruins. So I'm just really excited about it."

At the Rink: Devils at Hurricanes

The New Jersey Devils will look to string together consecutive wins for the first time in six weeks when they face the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; MSG+, FS-CR).

The Devils, who defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 on Tuesday in their final game before the NHL's three-day holiday break, can pass the idle Ottawa Senators in the Eastern Conference standings into the second wild card for the Stanley Cup Playoffs with two points. Their most recent winning streak came when they defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 on Nov. 12 and the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0 on Nov. 14.

"We talked about it again today that we felt good about that win in Detroit, so we want to keep that good feeling going and some of the good things we did," goaltender Cory Schneider told Northjersey.com. "This is the time of year now where you've got to start to putting together streaks if you want to be a playoff team. We can be a good team or a nice team, but unless we start kind of distancing ourselves from the teams behind us or start catching teams in front of us, it's not going to mean much."

At the Rink: Canadiens at Capitals

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Winners of six consecutive games, the Washington Capitals are ready to get back to work Saturday when they play the Montreal Canadiens at Verizon Center (7 p.m. ET; NHLN, CBC, CITY, TVA Sports, CSN-DC) after four days off.

They'll be playing a Canadiens team that's been hit hard by injuries and has lost five consecutive games and nine of 10.

"The last time we played this team, they really forechecked us really well," Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. "We didn't have one of our better games. We ended up winning but we didn't feel like we really won the game. We had a good game by [Braden Holtby]. They'll be fresh; they'll be ready to go. We'll expect the team that we saw in Montreal: fast, comes at you hard and has very active 'D.' They play a real solid game, so I expect that to happen tonight."

Rosen's mailbag - Dec. 23, 2015

Here is the Dec. 23 edition of Dan Rosen's weekly mailbag, which will run every Wednesday in the Over the Boards blog during the 2015-16 NHL season. If you have a question, tweet it to @drosennhl and use #OvertheBoards.

Let's get to it:

The Flyers have found some consistency and confidence in their game. Do you think they'll squeeze in as a wild card? -- @BillyStayScheme

It's too soon to tell if the consistency they have found will carry them through this grind of a schedule. I'm not sold on them yet mainly because I'm not sold on their defense or goaltending. They seem to have the St. Louis Blues' number, but allowing a team to get a 3-0 lead on you is not exactly the best recipe for success in this League. It's about the worst, in fact.

What I will say is I am impressed with the Flyers' attack mentality. They are playing coach Dave Hakstol's system well. He wants them to have some risk in their game. They seem to be playing that way. It's working. Shayne Gostisbehere is the perfect example. When he's on, he makes a big difference. But what will the Flyers do when Mark Streit is ready to return? Gostisbehere is no lock to stay, as crazy as that may sound.

Coach's Challenge: TOR @ ARI - 12:58 of the Second Period

At 12:58 of the second period in the Maple Leafs/Coyotes game, Toronto requested a Coach's Challenge to review the “Interference on the Goalkeeper” decision that resulted in a “no goal” call.

After reviewing all available replays and consulting with NHL Hockey Operations staff, the Referee confirmed that Toronto's Shawn Matthias made incidental contact with Arizona goaltender Louis Domingue before the puck crossed the goal line, preventing Domingue from doing his job in the crease.

Therefore the original call stands – no goal Toronto Maple Leafs.

Since the Coach’s Challenge did not result in the original call being overturned, the Maple Leafs forfeit their time-out.
