U.S. players take proactive steps to mumps outbreak

BOSTON -- The mumps outbreak that has infected more than a dozen NHL players is not being taken lightly by the managerial team at USA Hockey during the four-day selection camp on the campus of Boston University this week.

USA Hockey general manager Jim Johannson said that while he hasn't received any instruction from the International Ice Hockey Federation with regard to the virus that now has affected six NHL teams, he made it a point to tell all 30 players just prior to camp to remain vigilant about their hygiene.

Wood takes prep school route to U.S. selection camp

BOSTON – If you're looking for proof that you don't need to play major junior or college hockey to catch the eye of USA Hockey, look for further than forward Miles Wood.

The 19-year-old from Buffalo, N.Y., is in his last year of high school at Noble and Greenough School. This week he's spending four days at the USA Hockey evaluation camp on the campus of Boston University at Walter Brown Arena. Wood hopes to earn a spot on the United States National Junior Team, which will compete in the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship later this month in Toronto and Montreal.

"My parents are strict on the school part of this whole thing," Wood said on why he's still in school. "But it doesn't matter where you play, just as long as you have the right mentality and you have that drive, no matter where you play, you will reach your goal."

Eruzione shares high praise for U.S. hopeful Eichel

BOSTON -- Mike Eruzione knows a little something about coming up big in clutch situations.

He did it for the United States against Russia in "The Miracle on Ice" during the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y. Eruzione, who serves as Boston University's director of special outreach at his alma mater, was on hand Tuesday to witness the new breed of American hopefuls looking to earn a roster spot for their country at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship.

One player he didn't have to think too hard about was Boston University freshman Jack Eichel. On the way to leading the NCAA in scoring over the first half of the season with 27 points, Eichel has been coming up pretty big himself.

United States ready to be patient with injured Santini

BOSTON – Boston College sophomore Steven Santini probably didn’t know what to think about his chances for being part of the United States National Junior Team for the 2015 IIHF Junior World Championship when he injured his right wrist in late October.

Santini, a second-round pick of the New Jersey Devils in 2013, hasn’t played since Oct. 25, when a fluke run-in with a player from University of Massachusetts in the corner led to the injury. Santini had surgery a couple days later.

Canucks not releasing Horvat to play for Canada

Forward Bo Horvat will remain with the Vancouver Canucks and not be released to play for Canada at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship, the Canucks announced Monday.

"Bo Horvat has proven he can contribute to the success of the Vancouver Canucks," general manager Jim Benning told the Canucks website. "He is a solid two-way player, strong in the faceoff circle and displays a maturity beyond his years. We're very pleased with Bo's play and look forward to watching him develop as an NHL player."

In 17 games Horvat, 19, has one goal and four assists while averaging 10:10 of ice time per game. He has won 57.4 percent of his faceoffs.

Canada's McDavid full practice participant: report

Top 2015 NHL Draft prospect Connor McDavid was a full participant at Canada practice Monday as preparations continued for the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship, according to TSN.

Canada is working out at Meridian Center in St. Catharines, Ontario.

It was McDavid's first practice since he broke his right hand in a fight Nov. 11 playing with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League.

The original estimate was that McDavid would be out five to six weeks; Tuesday will be five weeks since the injury.

Canada hopes the high-scoring center will be ready for the opener of the WJC; Canada plays Slovakia on Dec. 26. There's a chance McDavid could play in an exhibition game; Canada plays Russia on Friday and Sweden on Dec. 22.
