NHL Approves the Penalty Shot

Sept. 22, 1934: The NHL approved a new rule to allow the awarding of penalty shots (to be taken from within a 10-foot circle 38 feet out from the goaltender) when an attacking player is fouled when in "a good scoring position. On Nov. 10, 1934, Canadiens' Armand Mondou was stopped by Toronto's George Hainsworth (pictured) on the NHL's first penalty shot. Three days later Ralph "Scotty" Bowman of the St. Louis Eagles scored the first penalty shot goal in NHL history.
