June 25, 1997: The NHL officially approved expansion to 30 teams by the year 2000 with the announcement of new clubs in Atlanta, Columbus, Minnesota and Nashville. The Nashville Predators entered the League in 1998-99, with the Atlanta Thrashers coming on board in 1999-2000. The Minnesota Wild and Columbus Blue Jackets begin play in 2000-01.
