Jeff Carter broke a 1-1 tie with just 49.4 seconds remaining in regulation and Jonathan Quick made 23 saves as the Los Angeles Kings earned a 3-1 victory against the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place on Tuesday night.

Colin Fraser scored in the second period and Jarret Stoll added an empty-net tally for Los Angeles, which moved back to the .500 mark with the win (6-6-2).

"Obviously we didn't want it to take that long," Carter said of the late goal. "It's just one of those games, Khabibulin was playing well. We were getting shots, but he was making saves. It's never easy in this building, but you have to stick with it for 60, 65 minutes, whatever it takes."

Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 35 of 37 shots for the Oilers, who lost for the second time in the past three games and fell to the .500 mark (6-6-3).

After the Oilers turned the puck over at the Kings' blue line, Carter beat Khabibulin through the legs with a quick shot.

"It's frustrating to lose a game in the last minute," said Khabibulin, who stopped 35 shots in taking the loss. "They were a more organized team than us tonight, it seemed."

Trevor Lewis had two assists and was a plus-3 for the Kings, who bounced back from a 3-2 loss at Chicago on Sunday. Los Angeles went 0-for-2 on the power play.

“The ‘D’ wasn’t really coming to me, so I slowed up a little and saw Carts and threw it at the net,” Lewis said. “Carts got a tip on it. It was a good bounce. I think we played a pretty solid road game tonight. To come out with a win is huge. We’ve got to keep this going and get back in the playoff hunt.”

Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jordan Eberle and Justin Schultz were all minus-3 for Edmonton. The Oilers went 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

The Kings took a 1-0 lead at 4:44 of the second period when Khabibulin made a save on a long shot by Jordan Nolan, but the Oilers were unable to clear the rebound as Fraser swooped in for his first of the season.

Los Angeles held the bulk of the momentum in the period, at one point outshooting Edmonton 13-1, but the Oilers fought back to tie things up.

Seconds after Khabibulin made a diving save after an odd bounce off the boards, Edmonton connected on the power play as a shot by Sam Gagner beat a screened Quick at 16:50.

"Even though the shot clock didn't show it, we outchanced them quite a bit," Oilers coach Ralph Krueger said. "We just couldn't generate the type of offence we would have liked to down the stretch. The bounce at the end was of course, painful. If you look at the game, I think going to overtime and splitting this up would have been probably the right result, but we have to take it. We missed an opportunity to play our game the whole way. It's a bounce we have to swallow."
