Kovalev's pair helps Senators beat Coyotes 5-2
Phoenix Coyotes 2, Ottawa Senators 5
Alex Kovalev finally scored a goal on Tuesday night. He liked it so much, he did it again.

Kovalev had a three-point night and Brian Elliott made 28 saves as the Ottawa Senators earned a 5-2 victory against the Phoenix Coyotes at Scotiabank Place.

"It's one of those games … finally, a little luck turned around and started going my way," Kovalev said. "It was definitely nice to get a couple of goals."

Kovalev and Erik Karlsson scored 9 seconds apart in the first period to break the previous team record for the two fastest tallies in franchise history. Karlsson opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 5:27, and his goal was still being announced when Kovalev made it 2-0 at 5:36, breaking the record of 10 seconds set 15 years earlier. Martin Straka and Antti Tormanen scored 10 seconds apart in the second period of a 4-2 win against Calgary at the Ottawa Civic Centre on Oct. 19, 1995.

Kovalev added his second goal in the third and got his third point of the game with an assist on Daniel Alfredsson's goal during a two-man advantage late in the period.

Chris Kelly also scored for the Sens, who have won two of three since a 1-4-1 start despite the absence of Jason Spezza, who missed his third straight game due to a groin injury.

"It feels better to get yourself going and start contributing to the team," Kovalev said. "We're not playing well lately, so it'd be nice to start a winning streak."

Sami Lepisto and Keith Yandle scored for Phoenix, which has lost three in a row (0-1-2), including the first two games of a three-game trip that concludes in Detroit on Thursday night.

Jason LaBarbera made 17 saves in the first during his second start of the season. Ilya Bryzgalov, who made 26 saves in a 3-2 overtime loss in Montreal, replaced LaBarbera to start the second. He stopped 14 shots in two periods.

Senators defenseman Sergei Gonchar played his 1,000th regular-season game. He assisted on Alfredsson's goal.

"It's not about the point, it's about the win," Gonchar said. "There were so many things that were going through my mind. It was a big thing for me."

Outshot 20-8 while falling behind 3-0 in the first, Phoenix held an 11-5 margin in shots in the second and got on the board when Lepisto scored his first of the season at 4:15 into the middle period. Yandle drew the Coyotes within 3-2 with his first goal at 6:58 of the third.

But Kovalev restored Ottawa's two-goal lead 48 seconds later when he beat Bryzgalov.

Karlsson put Mike Fisher's rebound into the right side with Doan off for slashing. Kovalev then got his first of the season.

"He didn't get any help. The first one was an empty net and then Kovalev has a great shot. The third one bounces off our guy and you can't do anything about that, but we've got to give him more help," said Coyotes captain Shane Doan, was back in the lineup after serving a three-game suspension for his blindside hit on Anaheim's Dan Sexton on Oct. 17. "We put ourselves in a position where we had to chase the game all night."

Nick Foligno, who assisted on Kovalev's first goal, put a backhand off the left post midway through the first before Kelly made it 3-0 with his second of the season at 14:45.

"We played an unbelievable first period which set up the whole game for us. We got a little bit of penalty trouble and couldn't get any momentum in the second, but Elliott played well and Kovalev made a difference," Alfredsson said.
