Oilers rally for 6-4 win over Avalanche
Colorado Avalanche 4, Edmonton Oilers 6

Better late than never.

That was the sentiment in the Edmonton Oilers' dressing room Wednesday night after Ryan Potulny, Patrick O'Sullivan and Ales Hemsky scored in the third period to lead the club to a come-from-behind 6-4 win against the Colorado Avalanche atRexall Place

Shawn Horcoff, Gilbert Brule and Sam Gagner also scored for Edmonton (9-10-3), which ended a four-game losing streak. The Oilers have won only three times in their last 13 games but improved to 7-3-1 on home ice.

''Our guys have accepted losses a few times,'' Edmonton coach Pat Quinn said. ''There's been an, 'Oh, well, we played hard' response. But we decided to get going later in the game. We had a lot of verve later on. We were in a hole again and it was pretty easy to feel sorry for ourselves but we worked our way out of it.''

Milan Hejduk scored twice for Colorado (13-6-3), which also received goals from David Jones and Kyle Cumiskey. The Avalanche, who are off to a terrific start this season, have lost four of their last five games.

''When you have a 4-3 lead going into the third on the road, you have to find a way to win that game,'' Colorado coach Joe Sacco said. ''Those are the ones you have to put away and we didn't do that.''

The Avs led 2-1 after the first period on Hejduk's ninth and 10th goals of the season. His second goal, which came with 1:24 left, was scored less than two minutes after Horcoff erased Colorado's 1-0 lead.

Brule tied the game for Edmonton when he beat Peter Budaj (27 saves) just 21 seconds into the second period, but the Avs responded with back-to-back tallies against Jeff Deslauriers (14 saves) by Jones and Cumiskey.

However, Gagner gave the Oilers some momentum heading into the second intermission by scoring with just 16 seconds left in the period to cut the Avs' lead to 4-3. Potulny then scored on the power play 2:45 into the third off a rebound before O'Sullivan put home a rebound of his own less than nine minutes later to give Edmonton the lead. Hemsky scored into an empty net in the final minute to secure the victory.

''It was a huge win for us,'' Gagner said. ''It's a big momentum boost for us, especially after four straight losses on the road. It's a good feeling. This is an important time for us with this stretch at home. We're below .500 but we feel it is a position we can battle back from. Hopefully we can keep on moving forward.''
