Fisher scores twice as Senators top Leafs 3-2
Toronto Maple Leafs 2, Ottawa Senators 3

Thanks to Mike Fisher and Pascal Leclaire, the Ottawa Senators are 2-for-2 in the Battle of Ontario this season.

Fisher scored twice, including the tie-breaking goal at 14:10 of the second period, as the Senators beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on Tuesday night -- their second win in as many tries against their provincial rival.

A game that saw four fights, numerous big hits and plenty of scoring chances was decided when Fisher slung a wrist shot from high in the left circle that caught the far corner past Vesa Toskala.

Pascal Leclaire, who's been taking some heat in recent weeks for allowing soft goals, made the lead stand up in the third period, making 15 of his 30 saves. He made a great move to reach his stick back and steer the puck out of the crease after a fluke bounce almost got past him, and survived another close call when Leafs forward Lee Stempniak hit the post with a shot from in close.

"I felt good out there and was able to make some good saves," said Leclaire, who was given the last game off and watched backup Brian Elliott turn in a solid performance in a 2-1 shootout loss to the New York Rangers on Saturday. "It was a real fun game. A few fights and I think the intensity was pretty high."

Ottawa improved to 20-9-3 against the Leafs since 2005-06, including a 2-1 victory on Oct. 6.

The loss dropped the Leafs (3-11-5) into a tie for last in the overall standing with Carolina, which lost 3-2 in a shootout at Montreal -- and left coach Ron Wilson frustrated.

"We had offense. We didn't finish the chances," he said. "A couple of sloppy plays in the neutral zone resulted in three goals against. It seems like every mistake ends up in our net. If we make four or five a night, they find a way of getting in there -- and we can't seem to get the same finish down at the other end."

Fisher opened the scoring 8:08 into the game when he was left alone in the slot to hammer in a rebound after Toskala stopped Alex Kovalev's shot from the left wing. The lead lasted just 62 seconds left Phil Kessel fired a wrist shot from well beyond the top of the right circle that sailed past Leclaire.

Niklas Hagman curled out of the corner and into the right circle before beating Leclaire with a wrister 4:49 into the second period to put Toronto ahead. Milan Michalek's power-play tip of Alexandre Picard's shot at 11:03 pulled the Senators even at 2-2.

After Fisher put Ottawa back in front, Leclaire made the lead stand up as the Senators ended a two-game losing streak.

"We had enough chances, especially in the second half of the third period," Wilson said, "but their goalie made some real good saves -- and probably a couple of lucky ones, too.

Senators coach Cory Clouston was happy with his team's play for most of the night.

"We liked our first 50 minutes of the game," he said. "We played our last 10 not to lose. You can't have success like that, but we got the two points. We needed (Leclaire) and he was at his best."

Toronto has dropped its last four games

"It's tough," forward Matt Stajan said. "We're definitely working hard and getting chances, but, at the end of the day, we've got to find a way to score one more than the other team."
