Calgary Flames 3, Washington Capitals 3 FINAL OT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Jaromir Jagr's "one-in-a-million" goal with 0.8 seconds remaining capped one of the craziest games of the season.

Jagr was behind the goal line near the boards when he shot. The desperate fling struck the bottom of the net, bounced up and struck goaltender Jamie McLennan behind the left knee and went in, giving the Washington Capitals a 3-3 tie with the Calgary Flames.

"I had no choice. I know there's no time left, and I just it pushed it," Jagr said. "It was just a lucky shot."

Said McLennan: "It jumped up and hit my knee. It was just a one-in-a-million shot."

That one goal would be incredible in itself, but it happened to be the sixth goal in a wild six-minute stretch in a game that long appeared headed for a scoreless tie.

"It felt like a Pee-Wee game at the end -- in all due respect to Pee-Wees," Washington coach Glen Hanlon said. "It was happening so quick. It was really quite confusing."

There were no goals for the first 54 minutes, but Trent Whitfield scored his first of the season for the Capitals, and the offensive onslaught was on.

Matthew Lombardi and Oleg Saprykin scored 29 seconds apart to give the Flames the lead. Sergei Gonchar tied it at 2 on a power-play goal with exactly one minute remaining. Jerome Iginla punched in the puck from the right of the crease with 38 seconds left to put the Flames back ahead.

Then Jagr came through with his 15th goal of the season.

"It's probably the wackiest hockey I've ever seen," said Washington goaltender Olaf Kolzig, who made 41 saves but had his shutout streak end at 169 minutes, 20 seconds. "It was strange hockey. It definitely felt like a playoff game. It was 0-0 for the longest time. We scored with five minutes to go. In a playoff game, that's normally game over."

Most of the goals involved mad scrambles in front of the net. Lombardi was given credit for a goal when the puck was knocked in by Capitals defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski. Saprykin's score was a second-effort rebound after a shot by Iginla.

There were no goals in overtime, but the Flames had a power play and ended the game with a short five-on-three advantage after a few punches were thrown. After such a bizarre finish to regulation, the extra period just didn't seem enough.

"We need a shootout now," said Iginla, who has six goals and six assists in six games. "We needed a shootout to get the result at the end there."
