Calgary Flames 1, Chicago Blackhawks 3 FINAL

CHICAGO (AP) -- Rookie goaltender Michael Leighton took advantage of a second chance.

Leighton made 28 saves one night after a 7-4 loss at Minnesota, and Steve Sullivan broke a tie with a power-play goal 2:34 into the third period to help the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Calgary Flames 3-1 on Thursday night.

"This game was very important (for Leighton)," Chicago coach Brian Sutter said. "He had two games where we outplayed the opponent and we lost."

Leighton was determined not to let that happen again.

"I wanted to get back out there and prove (Wednesday) was a fluke," Leighton said. "I let my team down the last game. I wanted to come back and try to help us win a game."

From a scrum in the crease, Sullivan swatted a loose puck that struck Jamie McLennan's pad and barely trickled over the goal line.

Bryan Berard added an empty-net goal with 26 seconds left.

Kyle Calder also scored for the Blackhawks, who won for just the fifth time in their last 29 games (5-16-4-4). Tyler Arnason assisted on all three goals.

Oleg Saprykin was the only Flames player to beat Leighton, scoring on a power-play deflection. Calgary got 21 saves from McLennan.

"We didn't have the energy level to sustain anything tonight," Calgary coach Darryl Sutter said. "This is a game where your big guys have to win you the hockey game. They had the opportunity to score, but didn't."

Calgary defenseman Andrew Ference sustained a right shoulder injury late in the first period when he was checked hard by Chicago's Stephane Robidas into the boards. Ference returned for three shifts in the second period, then left the game.

Chicago center Alex Zhamnov didn't play in the third period. Brian Sutter suggested Zhamnov might have a shoulder injury. However, a team spokesman said Zhamnov was vomiting between the second and third periods.

Saprykin opened the scoring 4:54 into the first period. Robyn Regehr's shot from the left point hit traffic, changed direction, then deflected off Saprykin's skate as he cut through the crease.

Calder tied it 1-all with 3:10 left in the first. After taking a pass from Arnason, Calder cut to the net with Calgary defenseman Toni Lydman on his back and slid a shot past McLennan on the stick side.

The Flames played the final 4:29 of the second period with a power play, including 1:29 with a two-man advantage. Calgary managed only one shot on goal during the span, but Jordan Leopold's drive from the point hit the post with 1:20 left in the period.

Sullivan gave Chicago a 2-1 lead. Berard fired the puck in from his own blue line to complete the scoring.
