Penguins look to get back on track against Bruins
Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Boston Bruins

PENGUINS (13-4-2) at BRUINS (13-9-0)

Season series: This is the first game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins. The Bruins won two of three games against the Penguins last season with their most recent game on Dec. 7, 2013.

Penguins team scope: Before last weekend Pittsburgh was among the hottest teams in the NHL with 10 wins in its past 11 games. That hot streak came to a halt when the Penguins were swept by the New York Islanders in a home-and-home series, leaving the two teams locked in a tie atop the Metropolitan Division. Though the first of the two losses came in a shootout Friday, the Penguins let a first-period lead against the Islanders slip away in the second before giving up three goals in the third of a 4-1 loss Saturday. "It was a tie game going into the third [period], so we can't say we didn't give ourselves a chance," center Sidney Crosby said. "They raised their level and we didn't." Crosby, in particular, struggled against New York with one shot and no points over the two games. The Penguins captain has one goal in his past 11 games.

Bruins team scope: Though Boston has remained in the thick of the Eastern Conference's Stanley Cup Playoff field early this season, the Bruins have not been able to keep up with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Montreal Canadiens in the Atlantic Division. They missed an opportunity to close the gap with first-place Montreal on Saturday, losing 2-0 to the Canadiens on home ice. The Bruins have still won eight of their past 11 games, but with one of those wins coming against teams currently in the top eight in the East or West, victories against top competition are still in short supply. Health issues throughout the lineup haven't helped -- the Bruins dressed five rookies Saturday -- and with lingering injuries affecting Zdeno Chara, Brad Marchand and David Krejci, it could be some time before coach Claude Julien can play his best team.
