Big story: It's the first Stanley Cup Playoff game at Nationwide Arena in five years, and the Columbus Blue Jackets hope to carry the momentum of winning a postseason game for the first time in franchise history. The Blue Jackets rallied from a 3-1 deficit on Saturday to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in overtime to even this Eastern Conference First Round series at one win apiece.
Penguins: Five of the 14 goals scored in this series have been scored at even strength. Special teams played a huge role in each of the first two games; after going 2-for-3 on the power play in Game 1, the Penguins went 1-for-8 on Saturday. Pittsburgh has allowed two shorthanded goals, one in each game.
"I think just execution," captain Sidney Crosby told the Penguins website Sunday when asked about the power-play struggles in Game 2. "We're not creating enough consistently. Either we're not entering well or forcing things when we do get set up. That's an area we definitely have to improve in."
Blue Jackets: Columbus is certainly eager to play in front of its home crowd, but the Blue Jackets will have to do so without Fedor Tyutin. The reliable defenseman sustained an undisclosed injury during Game 2, and coach Todd Richards said Monday he will be replaced in the lineup by Dalton Prout.
Tyutin had 26 points and a plus-6 rating in 69 regular-season games and ranked third on the Blue Jackets by averaging 21:24 of ice time per game.
"He's a veteran guy that's played some big minutes for us, a steady Eddie back there," defenseman James Wisniewski said. "The way that our defense corps has been playing all year, you have to go with it. Obviously, losing one of our older guys, our veteran guys, hurts, but somebody's got to step up."
Who's hot: Penguins defenseman Matt Niskanen has two goals and two assists in the series. Defenseman Paul Martin has four assists. … Blue Jackets forward Matt Calvert scored twice Saturday, including the game-winner in overtime. Defenseman Jack Johnson has two goals and one assist through the first two games.
Injury report: Pittsburgh forward Marcel Goc (foot) is out, and forward Brian Gibbons (upper body) will also miss Game 3. … Columbus forward Nick Foligno (upper body) is confident he will play Monday. The Blue Jackets are expected to be without Tyutin (undisclosed) and right wing Nathan Horton (abdomen).
