Jets, Rangers in desperate need of points at MSG
Winnipeg Jets vs. New York Rangers

JETS (18-16-2) at RANGERS (16-15-3)

TV: TSN-JETS, MSG

Last 10: Winnipeg 5-5-0; New York 3-6-1

Season series: This is the third and final meeting of the season. The Jets have won both matchups in regulation.

Big story: The Jets had a chance to take a commanding lead in the Southeast Division on Saturday, but dropped a 3-1 decision at home to the Carolina Hurricanes. Winnipeg has a four-point edge on Carolina in the division, but the Hurricanes have played three fewer games. The Rangers, meanwhile, haven't scored a goal in nearly a week but are still hanging onto eighth place in the East. Both the Jets and Rangers need points in a bad way Monday.

Team Scope:

Jets: A big problem for the Jets on Saturday wasn't penalty killing but the penalties themselves. The Hurricanes had seven power plays and failed to score on any of them. But 14 minutes of shorthanded time took its toll and left the Jets unable to keep pace with the Hurricanes at even strength.

"The amount of power plays they had -- you don't want to go through that every game," Jets captain Andrew Ladd said. "We did a good job of getting those killed off. But we had our top guys killing penalties, and they're out there every other shift. It's tough to keep that tempo up."

Rangers: The offense has disappeared for the Rangers of late. After a five-goal outburst against the Philadelphia Flyers -- a non-playoff team right now with its share of defensive problems -- the Rangers were shut out in consecutive games by the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens. It has been 127 minutes, 47 seconds since Chris Kreider's goal capped the scoring against the Flyers.

"Nobody's happy about it, everybody's frustrated, but we're still in the thick of things," Rangers coach Tortorella said. "When they wake up tomorrow they've got to realize we're still in the thick of things. Things change pretty quickly if we just get some sort of success as we keep on going."

Who's hot: Jets forward Evander Kane has a goal and four assists in his last three games.

Injury report: Jets defenseman Mark Stuart (undisclosed) has not played since March 21. Defenseman Zach Redmond (leg) and forwards Anthony Peluso (hand), Jim Slater (upper body) and James Wright (upper body) are on injured reserve. ... The Rangers will be without defenseman Marc Staal for a 14th straight game with an eye injury
