Capitals-Islanders Preview
Washington Capitals vs. New York Islanders

GAME: Washington Capitals (25-39-12) at New York Islanders (33-38-5).

TIME: Saturday, 7 p.m. EDT.

While both the Capitals and Islanders have been eliminated from the playoffs, Washington's Alexander Ovechkin can make this matchup a historic one.

Ovechkin will try to become the sixth rookie to reach 100 points when Washington meets New York at the Nassau Veterans' Memorial Coliseum.

Ovechkin, the top overall pick in the 2004 entry draft, leads all rookies with 48 goals and 99 points. He also is trying to become the first rookie to surpass 50 goals and 100 points in the same season since Teemu Selanne has 132 points - including a record 76 goals - with Winnipeg in 1992-93.

"He's exceeded my expectations in his maturity and his hockey sense and grasp of our strategy," Capitals owner Ted Leonsis said. "He has not exceeded my expectations with his athleticism and skills. We're blessed to have been bad and win the lottery in the year we could pick Alexander Ovechkin."

Ovechkin has two goals and two assists in two games against the Islanders this season, both in Washington.

Ovechkin failed to score a goal for the fifth straight game, but drew an assist Friday in a 4-3 loss to Carolina. He has been on a tear over the last three weeks, recording four goals and 13 assists in an 11-game points streak.

The Isles' three-year streak of reaching the postseason ended with a 3-1 loss Thursday to the New York Rangers. The loss was the Islanders' sixth in a row - their longest skid since a seven-game slide from Nov. 20-Dec. 4, 2003.

Miroslav Satan scored a goal for the second straight game. He had five goals during a four-game goal streak from Oct. 19-25.

Satan has a goal and assist in three games versus Washington this season.
