NEWARK, N.J. -- Michael Bournival scored twice, and Carey Price made 22 saves to help the Montreal Canadiens to their fifth straight win, 4-2 against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Friday.
Price, playing his 400th NHL game, won his 21st game of the season and 200th of his career. Max Pacioretty scored a power-play goal, Tomas Plekanec scored into an empty net, and P.K. Subban had three assists for Montreal (25-11-2), which won for the eighth time in nine games.
"It's a long season, everybody needs to chip in every once in a while," Price said. "It seems like
everybody is doing their part at the right time of each individual game and we're finding ways to win hockey games."
The Canadiens are tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning for first place in the Atlantic Division after
the Lightning lost 6-3 at the Pittsburgh Penguins.
"It was good to get the goal," Ryder said. "I was happy to get the goal to get us back into the game (3-1). It was a big goal to get some momentum on the bench."
Keith Kinkaid made 22 saves for the Devils (13-20-7), who lost their second straight and for the ninth time in 11 games.
"I thought the first two periods, I didn't think we gave ourselves a chance," Devils interim co-coach Lou Lamoriello said. "In the third period, we came back, we had an opportunity, and that's what you ask for."
Bournival scored 6:31 into the second period, his first goal of the season in his seventh game. Nathan Beaulieu stole the puck from Jaromir Jagr, and Sergei Gonchar one-touched a pass to Bournival on left wing. Bournival's pass in the direction of Dale Weise hit the skate of Devils defenseman Jon Merrill and eluded Kinkaid.
"I was trying to pass it to Weise, he was driving the net," Bournival said. "I saw it hit [Merrill's] skate, so I'll take it I guess."
The goal was Bournival's first since April 5. The fourth-line center has battled upper-body injuries that have cost him time.
"I was so happy for [Bournival]," Pacioretty said. "He's worked all year, gone up and down with a couple of injuries, and it's nice to see him break through, so we're really happy for him."
Pacioretty scored late in the period on the man-advantage, snapping an 0-for-9 power-play slump. Subban kept Alex Galchenyuk's deflected pass in at the blue line and slid a pass to Pacioretty, who beat Kinkaid from the left circle between the pads to give Montreal a 2-0 lead with 51 seconds left.
"It was a really good play," Pacioretty said, referencing Subban's keep at the blue line. "The power play was clicking tonight, we were moving the puck around really well, and I was thankful to get some results on the power play."
Bournival scored his second of the season, and made it 3-0, at 2:47 of the third period, when he scooped up a rebound of Weise's shot.
"When you're in front, good things are going to happen," Bournival said.
Price, an eight-year veteran, was helped by the post twice, first on Marek Zidlicky's second-period shot, and in the third period on a shot by Adam Larsson. Price also used his mask to stop Tuomo Ruutu's wrist shot in the third period.
"I'm very blessed to be put in a position to do what I love to do, and there have been ups and downs there's no doubt," Price said, "but right now it's just fun to come to the rink and hang out with the boys every day."
Ryder, who returned to the lineup after a bout with the mumps, scored at 3:21 of the third period. Cammalleri cut Montreal's advantage to 3-2 with his 12th of the season with 5:49 remaining. Jagr picked up the primary assist, his 1,066th NHL assist and 1,777th point.
the lineup. Havlat had not played in four games with a virus, and Elias missed four games with the mumps.
"No question their addition to the lineup means a lot," Lamoriello said. "They're a little rusty, too, right now."
Devils defenseman Peter Harrold was hit in the face by Beaulieu's follow-through in the first period. He did not return, playing 2:56. Lamoriello confirmed Harrold sustained a head injury and had X-rays that came back negative.
Montreal forward PA Parenteau was injured midway through the second period and did not return, playing 8:06.
