Red Wings blank struggling Canucks 2-0

NHL.com | Wednesday, 08.06.2014 / 4:50 AM

This time, it was Jimmy Howard's turn for a shutout.

Five nights after Ty Conklin stopped 29 shots in a 3-0 win at Colorado, Howard turned aside all 25 Vancouver shots as the Detroit Red Wings blanked the struggling Canucks 2-0 on Thursday.

Justin Abdelkader and Valtteri Filppula scored during Detroit's 24-shot second-period barrage against Cory Schneider as the Wings improved to 3-0-0. They have outscored their opposition 10-3 -- and all three goals came after the Wings grabbed a 5-0 lead against Ottawa on opening night.

"Just attention to detail is important. Playing with pretty good structure, all on the same page. Obviously, you've got to give credit to our goalies," Abdelkader said. "Conks did a great job in Colorado and Jimmy did a great job tonight. Anytime you pitch shutouts the goalies get the credit right away."

Howard, in turn, credited his teammates after his sixth career shutout.

"Guys were doing a great job sacrificing their bodies down there on the power play," Howard said after the Wings killed all four Vancouver power plays. "We outwaited them at the top of the crease."

The Canucks lost for the second time in as many nights -- they were beaten 5-4 in Philadelphia on Wednesday. Vancouver is off to a 1-2-1 start after taking the Boston Bruins to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final last season.

"We can't let this slide here," Canucks captain Henrik Sedin said. "We need some wins. We had a good start tonight but we've got to keep going. We [want] to make the other team break down and make mistakes. Right now, we're the ones making mistakes."

Vancouver came out strong, outshooting Detroit 12-9, but couldn't beat Howard, who robbed Daniel Sedin twice in the final 3 seconds of the first period. Howard came across the crease to smother a deflection from the bottom of the left circle, then denied him again from in front of the net after a faceoff as time ran out.

"It's frustrating not to be able to score on those chances. But that's the way it is," Daniel Sedin said.

The Wings took command in the middle period. Abdelkader opened the scoring at 8:37 with his first of the season, beating Schneider from the lower left circle after taking a cross-ice pass from Todd Bertuzzi.

"Bert made a great play. Pav was driving the middle and took the defenseman's attention and even the goalie," Abdelkader said. "I got the pass from Bert and I was fortunately able to finish it."

Filppula made it 2-0 just 2:18 later with his first goal, one-timing a shot from the right faceoff dot past Schneider on a give-and-go with Johan Franzen.

"I thought our second period, we got a lot more competitive than the first. We took the game over," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said.

Howard and the Wings got a break when Cody Hodgson' shot from the right circle bounced off the goaltender and into the net an instant after time expired in the second period. A video review confirmed the puck entered the net after time expired.

"We had some Grade-A scoring chances to take the lead and we just couldn't," coach Alain Vigneault said. "Their goaltender made some key saves at key times. Halfway through ... they sort of picked up their pace and their intensity and we had a tough time following."
