The following news won't create waves in the fantasy world, but it's right up the alley of the theme of this column: Defenseman Karl Rachunek won't be back with the Devils next season. Something about reportedly talking to a European team during the season, not to mention his underwhelming stats.
When it comes to players you can count on being with new squads in 2008-09, Rachunek's situation is the only sure thing at the moment in what figures to be an interesting offseason for player movement, of which fantasy players always should take stock.
A player changing address via free agency or trade in the offseason always causes an analysis of his fantasy value, but that's not easy to do several months before training camp begins. Factors that must be considered are new linemates, philosophy of the new coach, injury history, pressure from a new (and presumably more lucrative) contract, and even media expectations.
Consider this: Among the 18 free agents with 50 or more points in 2006-07 before changing teams, only Scott Gomez (16-54-70) of the Rangers, Petr Sykora (28-35-63) of the Penguins, Viktor Kozlov (16-38-54) of the Capitals and Robert Lang (21-33-54) of Chicago tallied more points in 2007-08, according to STATS LLC. Keith Tkachuk of St. Louis posted 27-31-58 in 2007-08, the exact same totals he had the previous season with the Blues and Thrashers before becoming a free agent.
