The Edmonton Oilers and Carolina Hurricanes are headed for a seventh and deciding game in the Stanley Cup Final. The Oilers pushed the series to the limit Saturday night with a dominating 4-0 victory. The Hurricanes will try to win the first NHL championship since joining the league in 1979 when they host the Oilers at the RBC Center Monday night.
Here are some of the key numbers from Game 6, and some looking ahead to Game 7.
2 -- Number of times Game 7 of the Final has been won in overtime. The Detroit Red Wings are the only team to win the Stanley Cup in OT. They beat the New York Rangers 4-3 in double overtime to win the Cup in 1950 and defeated Montreal 2-1 in overtime four years later to win the Cup.
3 -- Bench penalties for too many men on the ice called in Game 6, two against Carolina and one against Edmonton. Prior to Game 6, there had been no bench penalties of any kind called in the series. Prior to this series, Edmonton had been called for three bench minors for too many men on the ice, all in the Western Conference finals against Anaheim, while Carolina had been called for two bench minors - one for too many men, the other for unsportsmanlike conduct - both in Game 4 of its second-round series against New Jersey.
4 -- Number of times in the last five playoffs that the Stanley Cup Final has gone to a seventh game (2001, 2003, 2004, 2006). From the time of the first expansion in 1967 to 2000, there had been only three seven-game Finals. It's the first time since the Final went to a best-of-seven format in 1939 that the series has gone the limit three times in a row and four times in a five-year span.
5 -- Times before 2006 when teams rallied from a 3-1 deficit to force a seventh game in the Stanley Cup Final. That includes 1942 and 1945, when one team won the first three games and the other took the next three. The team that led the series 3-1 has won four of the five series. Only the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, who lost the first three games to Detroit before winning the next four, were able to win Game 7.
9 -- Shots on goal by the Hurricanes in a span of 63:31, covering the third period and overtime of Game 5 and the first two periods of Game 6. During that span, the Oilers out-shot the Hurricanes 33-9.
14 -- Including this year, number of times the Stanley Cup Final has gone to a seventh and deciding game. The home team has won 11 of the first 13.
15 -- Minutes between shots on goal for the Hurricanes between Mike Commodore's long drive at 19:11 of the first period and Justin Williams' shot at 14:11 of the second period. Before Williams' shot, the Oilers had out-shot the Hurricanes 11-0 in the middle period.
16 -- Shots on goal by the Hurricanes in Game 6. Not only is that the fewest shots faced by a goaltender in any of the 11 shutouts during this playoff season, it's also the fewest shots on goal taken by any team in any of the 82 playoff games this year. The Oilers out-shot Carolina 34-16, including 21-7 in the first two periods.
20 -- Blocked shots by the Oilers in Game 6, 12 more than the number blocked by the Hurricanes. It was the first time in the series that the Oilers blocked more shots than Carolina.
23 -- Hits credited to Edmonton in Game 6, more than double the 11 recorded by Carolina. In the three games at Rexall Place, the Oilers were credited with 84 hits to only 43 for Carolina. In the three contests at RBC Center, Carolina was credited with 65 hits to only 50 for the Oilers.
35 -- Years since a team has won the Stanley Cup after losing the first two games of the Final. The 1971 Montreal Canadiens won the Cup after dropping the first two games to the Blackhawks in Chicago. The 1966 Canadiens and 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs won the Cup after dropping the first two games at home.
1972 -- Last time a road team won Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. The Canadiens rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the seventh game at Chicago Stadium to beat the Blackhawks 3-2 and win the Cup.
1994 -- Last time a team rallied from a 3-1 deficit to force a Game 7 in the Final. The Vancouver Canucks trailed the New York Rangers 3-1 before winning Games 5 and 6, but the Rangers ended a 54-year Cup drought by taking Game 7.
