The Ottawa Senators signed forward Carter Camper to a one-year, two-way contract Wednesday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday agreed to terms with defenseman Kyle Cumiskey on a one-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Cumiskey, 27, played the past two seasons with MODO in the Swedish Hockey League. He ranked fifth among defenseman last season with 28 points (four goals) in 45 games.

Edmonton Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish entered the opening day of free agency aiming to make his team bigger and faster. He feels he did both by signing center Benoit Pouliot and defensemen Keith Aulie and Mark Fayne on Tuesday.

Aulie (6-foot-6, 228 pounds) and Fayne (6-3, 210 pounds) bring size to the blue line. Pouliot (6-3, 197 pounds) played for the New York Rangers last season; he adds speed and could take the spot of Sam Gagner, who was sent to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday in a deal that brought back 6-3, 203-pound forward Teddy Purcell.

Edmonton also re-signed 6-3, 240-pound forward Luke Gazdic to a two-year contract.

Forward Jiri Tlusty signed a one-year, $2.95 million contract Tuesday to remain with the Carolina Hurricanes, who also signed goaltender Drew MacIntyre to a one-year, two-way contract and forward Brendan Malone to a two-year deal.

Tlusty, 26, had 16 goals and 30 points in 68 games last season. Those numbers were down from the career highs of 23 goals and 38 points he had in 48 games in 2012-13 with Carolina.

In seven NHL seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Hurricanes, Tlusty has 73 goals and 142 points in 344 games.

Mike Cammalleri received a special phone call from an old friend not long after signing with the New Jersey Devils on the opening day of NHL free agency Tuesday.

"Jarome Iginla called to congratulate me and said that it must be pretty cool knowing I'd get to play with Jaromir Jagr," Cammalleri told reporters on a conference call. "It's great knowing I'll have an opportunity to play with him; he's a legend in our game."

Josh Gorges stood in the Montreal Canadiens dressing room just over a month earlier, and it was almost as if he knew what was coming.

Standing there in Madison Square Garden following his team's elimination from the Stanley Cup Playoffs at the hands of the New York Rangers in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final, Gorges was emotional, his words were heavy. He was unable to complete sentences at times.

He knew that what might have been his best opportunity to do what he has always said was his ultimate goal, to win a Stanley Cup with the Canadiens, had slipped through his fingers.

ST. LOUIS -- In each of the past three seasons, the St. Louis Blues have seen their Stanley Cup Playoff hopes ended by two of the premier teams in the Western Conference.

The Los Angeles Kings (twice) and Chicago Blackhawks, winners of the past three Stanley Cups, have sent the Blues into the summer earlier than they would have liked. One reason has been a lack of depth at center.

Blues general manager Doug Armstrong indicated at the team's exit meetings and subsequent media session that things needed to change.

The Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday signed center Joe Vitale to a three-year contract and goaltender Devan Dubnyk to a one-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed, but azcentral.com reported that Vitale's deal is worth approximately $3.35 million and Dubnyk signed for $800,000.

FRISCO, Texas -- Jim Nill had every reason to be a happy man Tuesday.

The Dallas Stars general manager started his day by acquiring veteran center Jason Spezza from the Ottawa Senators in a trade that cost him young forward Alex Chiasson and two prospects. He followed that move by signing veteran right wing Ales Hemsky, who showed late-season chemistry with Spezza after being acquired from the Edmonton Oilers, to a three-year contract reportedly worth $12 million.

Nill then signed backup goaltender Anders Lindback and added another veteran forward, Patrick Eaves, a player he knew well from his time with the Detroit Red Wings.

When Nill's day was done, he looked at the pieces he added and now sees a group of players who not only make the Stars more formidable on the ice but also bring a veteran presence to what he feels is already a great dressing room led by captain Jamie Benn.

"Something that I mentioned to both players [Hemsky and Spezza] that I keep mentioning to people when I talk is how good our dressing room is here in Dallas," said Nill, whose team qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2008, in his first season as GM. "I've been around some great dressing rooms with the Detroit Red Wings. This dressing room we have in Dallas, there's something special about it with our leadership starting with Jamie Benn, with our leadership in our coaching staff, with the young players, their determination, their expectations, their accountability. It's as good a dressing room as I've seen anywhere."

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed defenseman Stephane Robidas to a three-year contract, the team announced Tuesday.

Robidas, 37, split last season with the Dallas Stars and Anaheim Ducks, scoring five goals and 10 points in 38 games. The veteran was traded to the Ducks at the NHL Trade Deadline after spending parts of 11 seasons in Dallas.

"He's a heart-and-soul kind of a player," Toronto general manager Dave Nonis said. "He's a player I think that at the end of every year you can look back and say he's given you everything he had. He's still a very effective player."
