Sabres prospect sets NCAA record for saves

Notre Dame freshman goaltender Calvin Petersen, a 2013 draft pick by the Buffalo Sabres, set an NCAA single-game record Friday by making 87 saves, but it wasn't enough to win the longest game in college hockey history.

Shane Walsh scored 11:42 into the fifth overtime to give Massachusetts (11-21-2) a 4-3 victory and a 1-0 lead in their best-of-3, first-round Hockey East playoff series, which continues Saturday at South Bend, Ind.

Notre Dame (15-17-5) led 3-1 late in the second period, but UMass forward Steven Iacobellis scored his second and third goals of the game to get his team even entering the third period. The teams played five more periods without scoring until Walsh picked up a deflected shot in the slot and beat Petersen for his 13th goal of the season.

Massachusetts goaltender Steve Mastalerz finished with 75 saves.

Petersen, a fifth-round pick (No. 129) by the Sabres two years ago, was coming off 55 saves in Notre Dame's final regular-season game, a 3-1 victory against Boston College.

According to College Hockey News, the 151:42 of playing time was 1:20 more than the longest previous game, a 3-2 victory by Quinnipiac against Union in the 2010 ECAC quarterfinals.
