Fabbri helps lead Guelph to Memorial Cup title game

Guelph Storm forward Robert Fabbri continued to cement his status as one of the top forwards available for the 2014 NHL Draft with a goal and an assist in a 6-3 defeat of the Val-d'Or Foreurs on Monday at the 2014 Memorial Cup.

Minnesota Wild draft pick Zack Mitchell had a goal and two assists for Guelph, which also got a goal and an assist from Columbus Blue Jackets 2013 first-round pick Kerby Rychel. Goalie Justin Nichols made 30 saves as the Storm, champions of the Ontario Hockey League, outshot the Foreurs 49-33.

Guelph, which beat the Western Hockey League champion Edmonton Oil Kings 5-2 on Saturday, improved to 2-0 in the tournament and earned a spot in the championship game Sunday. They'll finish round-robin play Wednesday against the host London Knights.

Red Deer's Bleackley readies for Scouting Combine

Forward Conner Bleackley certainly left everything on the ice following 71 games with the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League and seven more for Canada at the 2014 IIHF Under-18 World Championship this season.

Now it's time to leave it all in the gym as he prepares for the 2014 NHL Scouting Combine in Toronto later this month.

"It's a little bit nerve-wracking," said Bleackley, No. 35 on NHL Central Scouting's final list of the top draft-eligible North American skaters.

Kingston's McKeown flashing first-round potential

Center Samuel Bennett wasn't the only top prospect making headway with NHL scouts playing for the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League this season.

Defenseman Roland McKeown, a 6-foot-1, 197-pound right-shot defenseman, was another gem added to the short list.

"I believe my game translates well at the next level," McKeown said. "I think my skating, agility, IQ and strength to battle in the corners are all key components to making a successful pro. And I feel being able to do those things will get me to the next level."
