Fantasy MVP for each NHL team at All-Star break

Pete Jensen - NHL.com Fantasy Insider

The All-Star break is a great time to recognize the most valuable fantasy player from each NHL team. Some were expected to be there; others have been surprises.

Since standard Yahoo leagues count six categories for skaters (goals, assists, plus/minus, penalty minutes, power-play points and shots on goal) and four for goalies (wins, goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts), the most accurate way to evaluate fantasy production over a particular time frame is to use Yahoo's performance-based rankings.

Unlike NHL.com's fantasy rankings, Yahoo's do not have future production in mind. These ranks evaluate how each player's statistical coverage stacks up to his peers, and can be used to identify the most valuable players for each team based on fantasy production to this point in the season. Each player is listed with his position(s) of eligibility and overall rank entering the break.

Fantasy goalies: Hurricanes' Lack pushes for No. 1 job

Eddie Lack's first season with the Carolina Hurricanes has been a bumpy ride. He was splitting time with Cam Ward and struggled to string together successive solid starts.

But that trend changed when Ward was diagnosed with a concussion, forcing him to miss Carolina's past four games. Lack (25 percent owned in Yahoo leagues) is 3-1-0 with two shutouts since Ward went down, making 32 saves in a 1-0 overtime win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Jan. 21 and 26 saves in a 5-0 win against the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.

These rankings indicate fantasy expectations for the rest of the season. Value is quantified by projected starts, peripheral category coverage, timeshare situations, team defenses, past performance and upside in standard Yahoo categories, which include wins, goals-against average (GAA), save percentage (SV%) and shutouts. These rankings reflect fantasy value, not necessarily the most talented goalies in order.

Fantasy defensemen: All-stars for each category

Wednesday, 01.27.2016 / 12:00 PM / Fantasy Hockey Draft Rankings, Advice and Analysis

Brian Metzer - NHL.com Correspondent

The NHL All-Star break begins Thursday and all eyes will be on Nashville, where a variety of events will play out as part of the League's All-Star Weekend. With that in mind, it seemed a good time to look at some surprises, or shall we call them all-stars, in each of the standard scoring categories in Yahoo Fantasy Leagues.

Standard scoring formats typically call for tracking goals, assists, plus-minus, penalty minutes, power-play points and shots on goal. We'll be looking at each of them, but have also included hits, since more and more formats have started to include the category.

Fantasy forwards: Lines with late staying power

Tuesday, 01.26.2016 / 12:00 PM / Fantasy Hockey Draft Rankings, Advice and Analysis

Pete Jensen - NHL.com Fantasy Insider

Less than one week into the 2015-16 season, I wrote about new lines with staying power. Each of the three featured lines has no more than one elite player and has been a driving force of fantasy success as we approach the NHL All-Star break.

Hart Trophy favorite Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks holds a 15-point lead in the NHL scoring race playing with top-scoring rookie Artemi Panarin and Artem Anisimov. Rookie Dylan Larkin, a 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game selection, has spent most of the season on the Detroit Red Wings’ top line with Henrik Zetterberg and Justin Abdelkader. And although Max Domi has been skating with Martin Hanzal lately for the Arizona Coyotes, a good chunk of his rookie success has come with Mikkel Boedker and Antoine Vermette as linemates.

So, on a similar note, here's the big question: Which lines around the League can stick together and be fantasy difference-makers down the stretch? Here are some lines with no more than one elite player that have shown chemistry and could translate to consistent fantasy success over the final 30 or more games of the season:

Fantasy All-Access: All-Star team of unsung heroes

Sean McCullen - NHL.com Staff Writer

Every Monday, NHL.com staff writer Sean McCullen identifies potential waiver-wire pickups and points out lineup moves and schedule impacts for fantasy hockey.

All-Access is about providing information on those NHL players who are available to a majority of fantasy hockey owners. This is not where you click to find breakdowns of Patrick Kane's 26-game point streak or Braden Holtby's brilliance in the first half.

This column is where I point out (sometimes, admittedly, with my fingers crossed) the unsung heroes of the fantasy game, the players who can help give you the edge you need in highly competitive leagues.

Ahead of the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game in Nashville this Sunday, I've put together an All-Access all-star team -- a team of the best players owned in less than 50 percent of Yahoo leagues.

Fantasy Friday: Lecavalier making noise in L.A.

Matt Cubeta - NHL.com Fantasy Insider

With the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2006-07, a 26-year-old Vincent Lecavalier had his best NHL season with a League-best 52 goals and 108 points, third-most in the League.

The following season he had 40 goals and 92 points. But after that season things started to decline for Lecavalier. He never scored 30 goals again, his point totals declined in three consecutive seasons from the 2009-10 until 2012-13, and he was bought out of his contract following the 2012-13 season.

Lecavalier then signed a five-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers on July 6, 2013, entering his age-33 season. He had 20 goals and 37 points in 69 games in 2013-14. Last season though he found himself in and out of the lineup and had 20 points in 57 games. This season he had one point in seven games for the Flyers and was scratched 23 times. On Jan. 6 the Flyers traded Lecavalier to the Los Angeles Kings.

Seven games into his Kings career, Lecavalier has looked like a new player with new motivation. He has three goals and an assist, with all three of his goals coming on the power play over the past four games. At even strength he's been centering a line with Jeff Carter and Tanner Pearson. He's also playing with Carter and Marian Gaborik on the power play. He's had at least 13:43 of ice time in four of the past five games.

Fantasy goalies: Crawford's Vezina-quality season

Thursday, 01.21.2016 / 12:00 PM / Fantasy Hockey Draft Rankings, Advice and Analysis

David Satriano - NHL.com Fantasy Staff Writer

The Chicago Blackhawks have been in the headlines this season because of how well they have played. While teammate Patrick Kane has garnered attention for his MVP season thus far, goaltender Corey Crawford has taken a backseat.

Crawford (99 percent owned in Yahoo Leagues) has won nine games in a row and allowed more than two goals twice. Chicago has been scoring during its 12 game winning streak, with 47 goals, but has allowed 22.

He leads all goalies in saves (1,101) and shutouts (six), and is second in shots-against (1,183). Among goalies to play at least 20 games he's ninth in goals-against average (2.14) and second in save percentage (.934). He's 27-10-2, three wins behind Braden Holtby of the Washington Capitals for first.
