Roundup: Kessel scores twice in Penguins debut

Phil Kessel had two goals in his Pittsburgh Penguins debut and Sidney Crosby had a goal and two assists in a 7-3 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes at Consol Energy Center on Tuesday.

Kessel, who was traded from the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 1, had four shots playing on a line with Crosby and Chris Kunitz.

Kris Letang had a goal and three assists, and defenseman Olli Maatta and forward Daniel Sprong each had a goal and an assist.

Sergei Gonchar, 41, who was signed to a professional tryout contract by the Penguins, had a power-play goal. Kunitz, Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist each had two assists.

James Wisniewski, Justin Faulk and Jeff Skinner scored for the Hurricanes.

Cam Ward started for Carolina and allowed six goals on 21 shots in 29:12. Rasmus Tirronen allowed one goal on eight shots in 27:57.

Marc-Andre Fleury started for the Penguins and made 22 saves on 25 shots. Backup Mathew Murray stopped all six shots he faced.

Flyers 5, Rangers 3: Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere scored two goals in the third period to help the Philadelphia Flyers defeat the New York Rangers at Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday.

Yevgeni Medvedev opened the scoring at 8:43 of the first period on the power play. It was the 33-year-old defenseman's first goal in the NHL after signing with the Flyers as a free agent from the Kontinental Hockey League on May 20.

Brayden Schenn gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead at 3:56 of the second period with a power-play goal.

After the Rangers got goals from center Oscar Lindberg and defenseman Mat Bodie 1:17 apart to tie it 2-2, Sam Gagner, acquired from the Arizona Coyotes in a trade at the 2015 NHL Draft, scored a power-play goal at 9:40 of the second to put the Flyers back on top for good.

Gostisbehere scored at 2:11 of the third period at even strength and again at 16:29 on the power play.

Bodie, who played with Gostisbehere at Union College, scored his second goal with 1:59 remaining to make it 5-3.

Flyers forwards R.J. Umberger and Wayne Simmonds each had two assists.

Philadelphia goalie Steve Mason made 29 saves on 32 shots.

New York goalie Magnus Hellberg made nine saves on 11 shots in 28:27 before being replaced by Antti Raanta, who allowed three goals on 17 shots.

Neither team scored in five minutes of play under the new 3-on-3 overtime format after the game ended.

Maple Leafs 2, Canadiens 1 (OT): Jake Gardiner scored a power-play goal 16 seconds into overtime in the Toronto Maple Leafs win against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre.

Gardiner had an assist on William Nylander's goal at 19:31 of the second period.

Michael McCarron gave the Canadiens a 1-0 lead 15:45 into the game.

Carey Price made 11 saves for Montreal. Zach Fucale gave up two goals on 16 shots.

Maple Leafs goalie Antoine Bibeau made saves on 13 of 14 shots. Garret Sparks made seven saves.

Toronto was 1-for-5 on the power play; Montreal was 0-for-2.

Bruins 2, Capitals 1 (OT): David Pastrnak scored his second goal of the game 12 seconds into overtime to lead the Boston Bruins past the Washington Capitals at TD Garden.

Pastrnak opened the scoring at 8:16 of the third period off a feed from David Krejci (two assists).

Nate Schmidt tied it for Washington with a power-play goal 1:19 later.

Malcolm Subban started for the Bruins and made 17 saves. Zane McIntyre allowed one goal on 10 shots.

Capitals goalie Justin Peters made saves on all 15 shots he faced. Philipp Grubauer allowed two goals on 17 shots.

Panthers 3, Stars 2: Jonathan Huberdeau scored two goals, and the Florida Panthers held on to defeat the Dallas Stars after building a three-goal lead at BB&T Center.

Huberdeau scored at 13:01 of the first period and 38 seconds into the second to give Florida a 2-0 lead. Nick Bjugstad's power-play goal at 10:09 of the third period gave the Panthers a 3-0 lead.

Tyler Seguin and Jason Demers scored in the third for the Stars to make it a 3-2 game.

Jack Campbell played the entire game for the Stars and made 32 saves.

Roberto Luongo started for the Panthers and made saves on all 15 shots he faced in two periods before he was relieved by Mike McKenna (seven saves).

Predators 3, Lightning 2 (OT): Mattias Ekholm’s power-play goal with 1:10 left in overtime gave the Nashville Predators a come-from-behind 3-2 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena.

Predators forwards Cody Bass and Viktor Arvidsson scored goals 2:10 apart in the third period to erase the Lightning’s 2-0 lead and help send the game to overtime.

Erik Condra and Jonathan Drouin scored for the Lightning. Condra opened the scoring at 2:58 of the second period, and Drouin made it 2-0 at 1:01 of the third.

Tampa Bay goalie Ray Emery made 10 saves without allowing a goal in 30:16 before being replaced by Adam Wilcox, who allowed three goals on 17 shots.

Nashville goalie Carter Hutton made 26 saves on 28 shots.

The overtime was played under the NHL’s new 3-on-3 format. However, the Predators had a 4-on-3 power play when Ekholm scored the winner.

Blue Jackets 3, Blues 1: Ryan Johansen had a goal and an assist to help the Columbus Blue Jackets defeat the St. Louis Blues at Nationwide Arena.

Johansen scored at 3:17 of the first period to give Columbus a 1-0 before assisting on Sonny Milano's power-play goal at 6:45 of the second.

Blues forward Dmitrij Jaskin got St. Louis on the board to make it 2-1 at 1:04 of the third period.

Gregory Campbell's empty-net goal gave Columbus a 3-1 lead with 13 seconds remaining.

Blues goalie Jake Allen played the first period and made three saves on four shots. Jordan Binnington stopped 13 of 14 shots in relief.

Sergey Bobrovsky made 24 saves and didn't allow a goal in two periods for Columbus. Anton Forsberg made 11 saves.

Blues 5, Blue Jackets 2: Alexander Steen scored the tie-breaking goal in the second period to help the St. Louis Blues to a win against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Scottrade Center.

The teams traded goals in the first period; Paul Stastny scored for St. Louis at 10:46, and Boone Jenner tied the game 1-1 at 14:11.

Justin Falk scored at 6:20 of the second period before Vladimir Tarasenko scored on the power play and Steen scored at 15:27 to give the Blues a 3-2 lead.

Alex Pietrangelo's power-play goal at 4:17 of the third and Spencer Asuchak's goal at 10:24 finished the scoring.

Tarasenko, Steen and defenseman Colton Parayko each had two assists.

Curtis McElhinney played the entire game for the Blue Jackets and made 31 saves on 36 shots.

Brian Elliott made eight saves on nine shots in the first period for the Blues before being replaced by Pheonix Copley, who made 13 saves in 39:48.

Columbus was 0-for-1 on the power play; St. Louis was 2-for-3.

Wild 1, Jets 0 (OT): Matt Dumba scored the only goal of the game at 4:12 of overtime to give the Minnesota Wild a victory against the Winnipeg Jets at MTS Centre.

Justin Fontaine and Charlie Coyle assisted on Dumba's goal.

Niklas Backstrom played the entire game for the Wild and made 28 saves for the shutout.

Ondrej Pavelec started for Winnipeg and stopped all 19 shots he faced. Connor Hellebuyck made six saves.

Blackhawks 5, Red Wings 4 (OT): Trevor Daley, in his first game with the Chicago Blackhawks, scored at 1:40 of overtime to lift Chicago to the win against the Detroit Red Wings at United Center.

Daley, who was acquired from the Dallas Stars in the Patrick Sharp trade, also had an assist.

Kyle Baun and Jonathan Toews gave Chicago a 2-0 lead after the first period. Teuvo Teravainen scored at 6:24 of the second to make it 3-0 Blackhawks.

Anthony Mantha scored for the Red Wings at 14:55 of the second period.

After Ryan Garbutt scored for Chicago at 2:39 of the third to make it 4-1, Detroit got three unanswered goals from Riley Sheahan, Teemu Pulkkinen and Luke Glendening to tie it 4-4.

Jimmy Howard started for the Red Wings and made 18 saves on 21 shots. Tom McCollum made 14 saves on 16 shots.

Scott Darling made 22 saves in 29:53. Mark Visentin allowed four goals on 16 shots.

Detroit was 1-for-3 on the power play; Chicago was 1-for-4.

Avalanche 5, Ducks 4 (OT): Alex Tanguay scored 1:18 into overtime to lead the Colorado Avalanche past the Anaheim Ducks at Pepsi Center.

Tanguay, Jack Skille (one goal, one assist), Nathan MacKinnon (two assists) and Nikita Zadorov (two assists) each had two points for Colorado. Conner Bleackley, Mikko Rantanen and Nick Holden had goals.

Jiri Sekac scored twice and Mike Santorelli had two assists for the Ducks. Julius Nattinen and Chris Wagner also scored.

Ducks goalie John Gibson played the entire game and made 26 saves.

Semyon Varlamov started for the Avalanche and allowed two goals on 17 shots. Roman Will made nine saves.

Colorado was 1-for-5 on the power play; Anaheim was 0-for-3.

Sharks 4, Canucks 0: Martin Jones made 30 saves in his debut with the San Jose Sharks in their victory against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena.

Jones, who played last season with the Los Angeles Kings, made 11 saves in the first period and again in the third to preserve the shutout.

Brent Burns and Tomas Hertl each had a goal and an assist for San Jose. Paul Martin opened the scoring 2:41 into the game, and Nikolay Goldobin had a power-play goal at 12:37 of the third period.

The Sharks were 2-for-3 on the power play.

Canucks goalie Ryan Miller allowed two goals on nine shots. Joe Cannata made 11 saves.

Vancouver was 0-for-6 on the power play.

Kings 3, Coyotes 2 (OT): Jordan Weal scored at 3:37 of overtime in the Los Angeles Kings' victory against the Arizona Coyotes at Staples Center.

Weal and Brian O'Neill each had a goal and an assist for Los Angeles; Michael Mersch scored in the first period.

Dylan Strome scored in the first period, and Jordan Martinook had a shorthanded goal for the Coyotes midway through the third.

Kings goalie Jhonas Enroth allowed one goal on eight shots before being relieved by Peter Budaj, who made 10 saves.

Louis Domingue started for Arizona and made 15 saves; Niklas Treutle allowed one goal on 11 shots.

The Coyotes were 1-for-6 on the power play; the Kings were 0-for-5.
