Ryan Smyth considers housing McDavid: report
Former NHL forward Ryan Smyth said he hasn't been asked but has considered letting Edmonton Oilers prospect Connor McDavid live with him this season.

Former NHL forward Ryan Smyth said he hasn't been asked but has considered letting Edmonton Oilers prospect Connor McDavid live with his family this season.

"Haven't been contacted at all (about McDavid) … it's all rumors," Smyth told the Edmonton Journal on Monday. "I haven't put my name forward. It's not that I haven't thought about it though."

Smyth, who played for the Oilers for 15 seasons and retired in 2014, lived with Edmonton teammate Kelly Buchberger and his wife when he started his NHL career in 1995, the Journal said.

"Three or four months I lived with them," Smyth said. "I babysat for them and they fed me."

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, the player McDavid is most compared to, lived with Mario Lemieux for almost five seasons after breaking into the NHL in 2005.

Smyth said his children would like to have McDavid, the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, join their household.

"I want the Oilers to excel going forward and Connor is going to be a big part of it, but you also have to protect the kid," Smyth said.

Smyth, 39, said he is looking to get back into the sport.

"I would like to sit down with (Oilers chief executive officer) Bob Nicholson and see what they're thinking," Smyth said. "I want to be involved in hockey but I don't know in what capacity."
