NEW YORK – The Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders and New York Rangers have been selected by the United States Environmental Protection Agency Region 2 as recipients of the 2011 Environmental Quality Award in recognition of their participation in the Rock and Wrap It Up! food recovery program.

The award, which celebrates each Club's outstanding commitment to protecting and enhancing environmental quality and public health, is the highest recognition presented to the public by the EPA.  Its announcement came just days after EPA Region 5 completed its tour of the NHL's Midwest Clubs, recognizing the environmental achievements of the Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, and Minnesota Wild. 

Since October, the Rangers, Islanders, Devils and Sabres have combined to divert 14 tons of food waste from reaching landfill while providing 21,000 meals to local food banks.  The 2010-11 season was the fifth in which the Rangers, Devils and Islanders have participated in a food recovery program. 

This season, the NHL became the first sports League to have all Member Clubs work with Rock and Wrap It Up! to pack up all prepared but untouched concession food on game nights for redistribution to local shelters.  By the end of the 2010-11 season, the League estimates that over 105 tons of food will be kept out of landfills.

EPA Region 2 Award recipients come from all sectors of the community -- including non-profits, businesses, community groups, individual citizens and environmental educators.  Rock and Wrap It Up! also is among this year's honorees. The EPA plans to celebrate the accomplishments of the Clubs at a ceremony in Lower Manhattan on Friday, April 29th.

The National Hockey League will continue to work with the EPA to raise awareness of environmental issues.
