Coach Chabot's Playing Statistics

Former NHL player John Chabot joined the Islanders as an assistant coach after spending two seasons as head coach of the Acadie-Bathurst Titans of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Prior to his time with the Titans, Chabot was an assistant coach for the QMJHL’s Gatineau Olympiques for four seasons, which included two appearances in the Memorial Cup Final. His coaching experience also includes running the midget division national team for the Aboriginal Sports Council in 2003.

 Chabot was drafted first overall by the Hull Olympiques of the QMJHL in 1978. During his final QMJHL year in 1982 he was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the QMJHL and was one of three finalists for the Canadian Junior Player of the Year. In the same year, his team went to the Memorial Cup Final.

In 1980, after his first year in Hull, he was drafted in the second round by the Montreal Canadiens. Chabot played for the Canadiens for two seasons and then the Pittsburgh Penguins before a four-year stint as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. He then spent the next ten years playing professional hockey in Europe where he captained his team for three years in Frankfurt, Germany. During his time in Europe, he had the opportunity to represent his country, playing for Team Canada in different international tournaments. He retired as a player in 2001.

Chabot helped form an NHL Aboriginal Alumni team, which travels the country playing games that support native youth programs. John and his wife Theresa have three children: Aubrey, Kyle and Alexandrea.
